{"id":40975,"date":"2025-07-05T14:37:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T14:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/40975\/"},"modified":"2025-07-05T14:37:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T14:37:14","slug":"reform-mp-james-mcmurdock-gives-up-whip-over-business-allegations-party-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/40975\/","title":{"rendered":"Reform MP James McMurdock gives up whip over business allegations, party says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Reform MP James McMurdock has given up the whip over allegations against him related to business propriety, the party says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Chief whip Lee Anderson said McMurdock, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, &#8220;removed the party whip from himself&#8221; pending an investigation into allegations since published by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/reform-mp-james-mcmurdock-suspended-after-sunday-times-investigation-ljh7rtprd\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Sunday Times.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;At Reform UK we take these matters very seriously and James has agreed to cooperate in full with any investigation,&#8221; Anderson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The party will not be commenting further, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The BBC has approached McMurdock for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Anderson said the allegations relate to business propriety during the pandemic,  before McMurdock became an MP last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He won the seat by 98 votes, beating Labour into second place, and taking the seat from the Conservatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A since-deleted profile published on Reform&#8217;s website quoted McMurdock as saying he worked in business prior to standing for the party, including at the banks Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">McMurdock is the second of the five Reform MPs elected in 2024 who have since lost the party whip, after Rupert Lowe was suspended in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">That came after the party alleged the Great Yarmouth MP had made &#8220;threats of physical violence&#8221; against then-chairman Zia Yusuf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The Crown Prosecution Service later said Lowe would not face criminal charges over the claims, which he called &#8220;false&#8221; and a &#8220;brutal smear campaign&#8221;.
