It\u2019s not going to be a recovery,\u201d the father of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, Gary Beckstrom, told the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Beckstrom seen with her father Gary. Facebook \/ Gary Beckstrom<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m holding her hand right now,\u201d the devastated dad added.<\/p>\n<p>She later died, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/27\/us-news\/sarah-beckstrom-one-of-the-national-guardsmen-shot-by-a-crazed-gunman-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Trump announced<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/27\/us-news\/one-of-two-national-guard-members-shot-in-dc-idd-as-andrew-wolfe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Guard Staff Sgt. It\u2019s not clear how this is going to end up. But let me be perfectly clear about how it will end up in this office \u2014 if one of them is to pass, and God forbid that happens, this is a murder one. Period. Elizabeth Gomes via Storyful<\/p>\n<p>Bondi said charges brought against Lakanwal would depend on if the pair live and she added the Justice Department is working at \u201clightspeed\u201d to bring a case against him.<\/p>\n<p>US Attorney General Pam Bondi told Fox News early Thursday that\u00a0Beckstrom had raised her hand to work the holiday for her comrades.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/26\/us-news\/trump-admin-ukraine-peace-plan-mom-of-karoline-leavitts-nephew-in-ice-custody-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Follow The Post\u2019s live coverage of President Trump and national politics for the latest news and analysis<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe volunteered to be there on Thanksgiving \u2014 working today \u2014 she volunteers, as did many of those guardsmen and women so other people could be home with their families,\u201d Bondi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet now, their families are in hospital rooms with them while they are fighting for their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This photo combo shows, National Guard members, from left, Staff Sgt. AP<\/p>\n<p>Wolfe, of Martinsburg, W.Va., began his military service on Feb. 5, 2019, while Beckstrom entered the Guard on June 6, 2023, the West Virginia National Guard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/552532\/wva-national-guard-confirms-identity-guardsmen-wounded-dc-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wolfe was assigned to the Force Support Squadron, 167th Airlift WIng of the West Virginia Air National Guard. Beckstrom was assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade in the West Virginia Army National Guard.<\/p>\n<p>They had been stationed in DC since August as part of President Trump\u2019s deployment of troops there to bring down crime. Beckstrom had been on Task Force orders in the Nation\u2019s Capital.<\/p>\n<p>Wolfe\u2019s former high school in Inwood\u00a0acknowledged him in a since-deleted tribue on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Pam Bondi said that the charges brought against Rahmanullah Lakanwal depend on if the two victims live. FBI<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Applemen community is deeply saddened to learn that Musselman High School alumnus, Andrew Wolfe, was one of the National Guardsmen injured in the shooting in Washington, DC,\u201d the statement said, WUSA 9\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/video\/news\/crime\/west-virginia-high-school-identifies-national-guard-shooting-victim\/65-e67fb2ff-0ea4-4db1-b7b0-3b33ad2decbb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease keep Andrew, his family, and all those affected in your thoughts,\u201d the post said. \u201cOnce an Appleman, always an Appleman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lakanwal, an Afghan national, came to the US in 2021 under Biden-era Operation Allies Welcome and was settled in Bellingham, Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The married dad of at least five kids applied for asylum\u00a0in December and was approved under the Trump Administration in April. He hadn\u2019t been granted permanent\u00a0residency as applicants must wait one year from when they get asylum to apply for the permanent status.<\/p>\n<p>Beckstrom was shot in the head and chest with a .357 Magnum-caliber revolver, just blocks from the White House. Facebook \/ Sarah Beckstrom<\/p>\n<p>Lakanwal, armed with a 375 Smith and Wesson revolver, is suspected of staging an ambush near the Farragut West Metro Station in Northwest DC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He reportedly only had four bullets in the gun he used to shoot Beckstrom first before picking up her weapon and proceeding to open fire on Wolfe.<\/p>\n<p>A major with the National Guard was checking in on troops when he heard the gunfire and came to help. The major didn\u2019t have a firearm and was only carrying a pocket knife when he sprung up on Lakanwal while he was reloading ammo, conservative lawyer and strategist\u00a0Mike Davis reported, citing law enforcement sources.<\/p>\n<p>The major\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/27\/us-news\/hero-guardsman-took-down-afghan-terror-attacker-with-pocket-knife-how-the-ambush-went-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stabbed Lakanwal in the head multiple times\u00a0<\/a>and wrestled him to the ground when a fourth Guardsman responded to the commotion and shot the alleged terrorist in the buttocks and leg.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorney for D.C. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>They held Lakanwal down until he was cuffed.<\/p>\n<p>Lakanwal is charged with possession of a firearm during a crime of violence and intent\u00a0 to kill while armed but the charges could be upgraded if either Wolfe or Beckstrom doesn\u2019t make it.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say Lakanwal carried out the crimes alone and the incident is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>CIA Director John Ratcliffe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/27\/us-news\/afghan-dc-terror-ambush-suspect-should-have-never-been-allowed-to-come-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Thursday that Lakanwal<\/a>\u00a0\u201cshould never have been allowed to come\u201d to the US.<\/p>\n<p>What appears to be a bullet hole in a sidewalk planter at the scene a day after two National Guard soldiers were shot near the White House in Washington, Thursday, Nov. 27, 2025.
