It\u2019s hard to see how one could conclude that this tragedy is evidence that we should return to the old money bond system,\u201d according to the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice. <\/p>\n Cook County prosecutors had objected to Reed\u2019s pretrial release during an Aug. 22 detention hearing in his aggravated battery case, according to a CWB Chicago report<\/a> on a transcript of the court hearing. <\/p>\n Prosecutors notified Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez of Reed\u2019s criminal background, which included an alleged arson in 2020 in Chicago<\/a>, according to CWB Chicago. A public defender argued that Reed should not be jailed because he needed services for his mental illness. <\/p>\n Molina-Gonzalez placed Reed on electronic monitoring, which prosecutors opposed, and the judge reportedly told them, \u201cI can\u2019t keep everybody in jail because the state\u2019s attorney wants me to,\u201d according to CWB Chicago.<\/p>\n The Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice said Reed\u2019s past arrests and releases \u201calmost all occurred under the money bond system,\u201d which demonstrates the \u201cold system \u2013 not the new one \u2013 didn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBefore, judges set money bonds without meaningful hearings. In the vast majority of cases, prosecutors had no chance to argue for denial of release and detention.
