{"id":411282,"date":"2025-11-28T20:07:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T20:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/411282\/"},"modified":"2025-11-28T20:07:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T20:07:15","slug":"los-angeles-has-captured-nearly-5-5-billion-gallons-of-water-from-storms-since-october-1-ladwp-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/411282\/","title":{"rendered":"Los Angeles has captured nearly 5.5 billion gallons of water from storms since October 1, LADWP says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">LOS ANGELES (KABC) &#8212; The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power says it has captured nearly 5.5 billion gallons of water since Oct. 1 following the recent storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Mayor Karen Bass&#8217; office announced the estimate on Tuesday, saying it&#8217;s enough to serve almost 68,000 homes for an entire year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">According to the National Weather Service, downtown Los Angeles received more than five and a half inches of rain in November, making it the 5th wettest November on record &#8211; that&#8217;s dating back to 1877.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The DWP captured rain through stormwater infrastructure, residential rain barrels and cisterns, and large spreading grounds such as the Tujunga Spreading Grounds that help recharge underwater aquifers, also known as &#8220;groundwater banks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Any groundwater can be pumped and treated to water quality standards for residential use, city officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;These investments are helping to improve our local water supply, reduce runoff into the ocean and enhance Los Angeles&#8217; overall resilience,&#8221; Bass said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The utility&#8217;s stormwater capture facilities have the capacity to capture more than 83,000 acre-feet per year (more than 27 billion gallons) under average conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Stormwater runoff that cannot be contained at these facilities is discharged to the Pacific Ocean via streams, rivers and storm drains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The DWP will continue working on expanding its stormwater capture projects to reduce runoff, and expects to implement more large-scale spreading grounds, as well as rain gardens and rain barrels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;This achievement points to the success of our investments in stormwater capture infrastructure to build our local water supplies,&#8221; said Janisse Qui\u00f1ones, DWP CEO and chief engineer. &#8220;As a key strategy to ensure a sustainable water future, our goal is to continue expanding and maximizing our stormwater capture efforts to eventually reach 48.9 billion gallons of annual capacity by 2035.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The DWP encourages its customers to help capture more stormwater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The department provides rebates that range from $50 for rain barrels that hold at least 50 gallons of water, to $300 to $500 for cisterns ranging in size from 200 to over 1,000 gallons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For more information, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ladwp.com\/who-we-are\/water-system\/sources-supply\/stormwater-capture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">City News Service, Inc. contributed to this report.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2025 KABC Television, LLC.
