target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">K\u00e9r\u00e9 Architecture<\/a> has revealed designs for the Biblioteca dos Saberes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/rio-de-janeiro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio de Janeiro<\/a>, which features perforated brick facades and a cylinder that rises from its centre.<\/p>\n<p>Biblioteca dos Saberes will be located in the city&#8217;s Cidade Nova neighbourhood and across from architect Oscar Niemeyer&#8217;s Samb\u00f3dromo parade ground, where the Rio Carnival takes place annually.<\/p>\n<p>According to K\u00e9r\u00e9 Architecture, it is the studio&#8217;s &#8220;first built project in South America&#8221;, and its second library project after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/01\/07\/francis-kere-gando-primary-school-25-buildings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gando Primary School Library<\/a> in founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/diebedo-francis-kere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Di\u00e9b\u00e9do Francis K\u00e9r\u00e9<\/a>&#8216;s hometown of Gando, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/burkina-faso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burkina Faso<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274736 size-full\" height=\"1330\"  \/>K\u00e9r\u00e9 Architecture has revealed designs for a public library in Rio de Janeiro located next to Oscar Niemeyer\u2019s Samb\u00f3dromo parade ground<\/p>\n<p>The building will be dedicated to indigenous and Afro-Brazilian heritage and the dance type samba, which originated in the country&#8217;s northeast region from the same roots. <\/p>\n<p>Samba also plays a prominent role in the city&#8217;s carnival celebrations across the way, while the building sits on the site of a former samba school.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It will contain reading rooms, library stacks, workshops, exhibition spaces, an auditorium and a cafe, with the interior set to progress from a &#8220;quiet to lively&#8221; program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Biblioteca dos Sabres\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>A cylinder rises through the centre of the library<\/p>\n<p>Wrapped in a perforated, layered facade, the library consists of three storeys of curved, flat planes that are covered in outdoor terraces.<\/p>\n<p>An illuminated, lamp-like cylinder, informed by the trees in the nearby Tijuca Forest, rises up through its centre.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274734 size-full\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>It is composed of three stories of curved planes and walkways<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Biblioteca dos Saberes is a celebration of the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro,&#8221; said K\u00e9r\u00e9. &#8220;This library grows from the city&#8217;s history and wisdom, from samba that moves the body to the poetry that moves the heart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The building also contains a number of elevated curved pathways, one of which bridges across the street to a monument dedicated to anti-slavery resistance leader Zumbi dos Palmares.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a winners\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Located near the city&#8217;s Little Africa neighbourhood, the project ties into the city&#8217;s slow reckoning with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilsoncenter.org\/blog-post\/slavery-brazil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">history of slavery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, a wharf that once served as the largest port for enslaved Africans arriving in South America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-30413525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was converted into a UNESCO World Heritage site<\/a> after it was uncovered during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/rio-2016-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Rio 2016 Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274725 size-full\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>It will be dedicated to Afro-Brazilian heritage and samba<\/p>\n<p>Designs were revealed during the country&#8217;s Black Consciousness Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2024\/11\/20\/brazil-black-consciousness-awareness-day-holiday-national\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recently decreed national public holiday<\/a> aimed at celebrating and reflecting on <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Brazilians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afro-Brazilian<\/a> culture and history.<\/p>\n<p>It is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riotimesonline.com\/sambas-new-stage-rio-demolishes-highway-to-enhance-cultural-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">larger revitalisation projects in the city&#8217;s downtown area<\/a>, including the removal of elevated freeways. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2015\/12\/17\/science-museum-of-tomorrow-santiago-calatrava-opens-rio-de-janeiro-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Museum of Tomorrow by Santiago Calatrava<\/a> is also located nearby, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/01\/25\/rio-de-janeiro-world-capital-of-architecture-2020-unesco-uia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the
