Latest figures from the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/drugs\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS Business Services Authority (BSA)<\/a> show that <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">community pharmacies<\/a> throughout England dispensed 1.16 billion prescriptions in 2024\/25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">This marks a 4% rise from the year before and adds to a four-year consecutive increase in the number of people getting <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/drugs\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">prescriptions. <\/a>While some folks might be prescribed medication via the NHS, they might still have to foot the bill for it, depending on their personal circumstances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Nonetheless, numerous people across the UK could get their prescriptions without having to pay a penny for a variety of reasons. However, guidance from the NHSBSA emphasises that it&#8217;s up to the patient to verify if they&#8217;re eligible to claim a free prescription.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_GettyImages-1128675639.jpg\" alt=\"Female pharmacist reading prescription with pill bottle in one hand in pharmacy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The number of presciptions being dispensed has increased(Image: Getty Images)<strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Who is eligible for free prescriptions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">According to the NHS, the following groups can claim a free prescription:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"mirror\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Aged 60 or over<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Aged 16 and under<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Aged between 16 to 18 and in full-time education<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Are pregnant or have had a baby in the previous 12 months while owning a valid MatEX certificate<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Have a specified medical condition and a valid MedEx certificate<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Have a continuing physical disability that prevents you from going out without help from another alongside a valid MedEx certificate<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Hold a war pension exemption certificate and the prescription is for your accepted disability<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Are an NHS inpatient<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">You&#8217;re also entitled to free prescriptions if you or your partner (including civil partner) claim, or you&#8217;re under the age of 20 and the dependant of someone claiming:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"mirror\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Income Support<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">income-based Jobseeker&#8217;s Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">income-related Employment and Support Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Pension Credit Guarantee Credit<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Universal Credit and meet the criteria<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Free prescriptions for specific medical conditions<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_GettyImages-2159357505.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of a paper prescription bag, held out by a pharmacist\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Some specific medical conditions could be eligible for a free prescription(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">People with certain medical conditions are eligible for NHS prescriptions. Medical exemption certificates are credit-card-size cards which allow you to receive free prescriptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">They are issued if you have any of the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"mirror\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Cancer, including the effects of cancer or the effects of current or previous cancer treatment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A permanent fistula (for example, a laryngostomy, colostomy, ileostomy or some renal dialysis fistulas) requiring continuous surgical dressing or an appliance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A form of hypoadrenalism (for example, Addison&#8217;s disease) for which specific substitution therapy is essential<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Diabetes insipidus or other forms of hypopituitarism<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Diabetes mellitus, except where treatment is by diet alone<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Hypoparathyroidism<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Myasthenia gravis<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Myxoedema (hypothyroidism requiring thyroid hormone replacement)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Epilepsy requiring continuous anticonvulsive therapy<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A continuing physical disability that means you cannot go out without the help of another person (temporary disabilities do not count, even if they last for several months)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">How to apply for a medical exemption certificate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">To apply for a medical exemption certificate, request a form directly from your doctor. Once you have filled this in, your GP will sign a form to verify that you are eligible for the certificate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The certificate becomes valid one month prior to the date the NHSBSA receives your application form.
