(File photo courtesy of the foundation)<\/p>\n<p>The county <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/content\/sdc\/bos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Board of Supervisors<\/a> has voted 4-1 in favor of a plan that its sponsor describes as a first-of-its-kind\u00a0partnership between the county and the private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Diego Foundation<\/a> to protect essential services.<\/p>\n<p>Board Chair Terra Lawson-Remer said the\u00a0Partnership\u00a0to Protect San Diegans will combine county funds with philanthropic money \u201cto help stabilize nonprofit providers, prevent service shutdowns and help families continue to access food, housing assistance, and health care as federal funding retreats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to recent federal budget cuts in various social services, Lawson-Remer said working families \u201cshouldn\u2019t pay the price for decisions made in Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese cuts are hitting our neighbors, seniors on fixed incomes and people already struggling to keep a roof over their heads,\u201d she said, adding that up to $300 million \u201cin new cost pressures are landing on the county because of federal red tape and funding freezes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t wait for Washington to fix this,\u201d Lawson-Remer said. \u201cWe are the safety net, and this\u00a0partnership\u00a0is how we protect people right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Lawson-Remer, the\u00a0partnership, established via a memorandum of understanding, will involve:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>up to $36 million in county-contracted and nonprofit programs that would face cuts in food assistance, housing stability and health care<\/li>\n<li>doubling public dollars through a one-to-one match with the San Diego Foundation<\/li>\n<li>providing $8 million in quick relief through the San Diego Unity Fund, for food, housing, and health programs throughout the county<\/li>\n<li>saving the county an estimated $13 million over two years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mark Stuart, the foundation\u2019s president and CEO, said nonprofits \u201care on the front lines helping San Diegans stay housed, nourished and healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to work alongside the county and our philanthropic partners during this period of heightened need,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Supervisor Jim Desmond voted against the proposal on Tuesday. He said it was a great idea for the foundation to pay for part of the contracts, but he felt the board letter\u2019s language was too political and somewhat misleading. People won\u2019t lose federal assistance if they follow rules such as offering to volunteer or enroll in school, Desmond said.<\/p>\n<p>He also took issue with the proposal not needing further board approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds great, but I\u2019d like to see it before it comes back,\u201d Desmond added.<\/p>\n<p>Lawson-Remer said that because time was of the essence, she was not going to support it returning for a second board vote.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"San Diego Foundation headquarters against a dusk sky.
