{"id":413808,"date":"2025-11-29T22:58:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T22:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/413808\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T22:58:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T22:58:19","slug":"yeadon-library-highlights-black-entrepreneurs-on-small-business-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/413808\/","title":{"rendered":"Yeadon library highlights Black entrepreneurs on Small Business Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 20 Black entrepreneurs set up shop at the Yeadon Public Library for this year\u2019s rendition of the Black Saturday Shopping Extravaganza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just want the public to get in here and buy,\u201d Denise Stinson, president of the Friends of the Yeadon Public Library, said. \u201cMost people are doing things online because they don\u2019t want it to go out. But, these are unique items and that\u2019s why we want people to come out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going to find these online,\u201d she added. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to find these in the store and these people work hard making these things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delcotimes.com\/2024\/11\/30\/yeadon-black-saturday-extravaganza-raises-funds-for-borough-library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Friends of the Yeadon Public Library in conjunction with the library itself have been celebrating the Black Saturday Extravaganza every Saturday after Thanksgiving since 2014, with a short break during the pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"More than 20 Black entrepreneurs were featured at the Black Saturday Shopping Extravaganza at the Yeadon Public Library. CAREY \u2013 DAILY TIMES)<\/p>\n<p>Stinson noted the variety of vendors this year and offerings from African cloth to natural butters to jewelry and Eagles doll dresses and wreaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all unique stuff that you\u2019re not going to find online,\u201d she reiterated. \u201cThat\u2019s why people need to come in and support this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having just returned from Mozambique in October, Olivia Faison was selling cupulanas from that African country at the event for $20 each. This is the garb,\u201d she said as she opened one up, stretching the length of both her arms. \u201cThey use them for tablecloths. They carry their babies. They use it for wall art. They put it on their couch. If you don\u2019t know what to do, sleep on it, because the frequency, the energy from the colors \u2026 this is therapeutic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faison said her family is from Mozambique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I started going there and seeing them, I was like, \u2018This is so beautiful,\u2019 \u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019d bring one back and people were like, \u2018Where did you get that?\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<p>From there, she saw a grassroots business opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re so affordable in Mozambique,\u201d Faison said. \u201cI can bring them here and make a profit without overpricing, making it so people can buy it. I want them to be able to buy it. I\u2019m not going to price it so it\u2019s unaffordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She spoke about the support her business gives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ladies sell them and I buy from them,\u201d Faison said. \u201cThey appreciate it. CAREY \u2013 DAILY TIMES)<\/p>\n<p>Arlene Reid, a multi-talented entrepreneur, teaches chair yoga at the library on Fridays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and this weekend, she was selling scarves and fabrics.<\/p>\n<p>She saw the chance to participate in Saturday\u2019s event as \u201cthe opportunity to support and give back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reid, who also performs as Lady A, said that what she doesn\u2019t sell at the event Saturday, she planned to donate to charitable causes.<\/p>\n<p>Renee Lucas Wayne, artist director for Black Magic Women Productions, was showcasing her handmade winter collection of pillows Saturday through her business, Sister Love Perfect Pillows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the pillows are different in their design for women to celebrate and encourage other women,\u201d Lucas Wayne said. \u201cAll of them have a Scripture reference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shared how the pillows have provided during times of need.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Renee Lucas Wayne, aka Sister Scribe, shows her CD, &quot;Daughter of Zion,&quot; which she was selling along with her Sister Love Perfect Pillows at the Black Saturday Extragavanza. CAREY \u2013 DAILY TIMES)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is just for women to have something that they can hand off to another women,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve given them to women who were going into major surgery. They have something comfortable in the hospital to take with them or the nursing home to have something comfortable while they\u2019re there or to have something comfortable when they come home from the hospital and it\u2019s there. And it specifically speaks to their heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucas Wayne was also selling her spoken-word CD, \u201cDaughter of Zion,\u201d a collection of original spoken word poems she wrote under her pen name, Sister Scribe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all to uplift and encourage women,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve been told once they listen to the CD it\u2019s like they felt like they got a hug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she\u2019s going to be featured at a reading at the 2020 House at 20 Lansdowne Court in Lansdowne on the second Monday in January at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Yeadon resident spoke of the importance of participating in the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe in Small Business Saturday and especially now when everything is so more expensive and when we\u2019re trying to cultivate Black business and we\u2019re trying to sort of uplift our community Yeadon, and bond together and bring some economic development to our particular location,\u201d Lucas Wayne said. \u201cI thought it was important to do it here in our community on a day when we\u2019re all trying to do something to uplift Yeadon and the library in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"The Black Saturday Shopping Extravaganza was the Yeadon Public Library and the Friends of the Yeadon Public Library's event for Small Business Saturday. CAREY \u2013 DAILY TIMES)<\/p>\n<p>Gloria Gray was selling her exquisite creations from Gloria\u2019s Creations, with skills she\u2019s cultivated for more than 20 years, with one-of-a-kind dresses for dolls, such as sports team-themed dresses, as well as Eagles wreaths and people-sized hats and tote bags.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like them all,\u201d she smiled. \u201cI like all of them \u2026 Each dress is different because they\u2019re freehand. Every piece is different because I wrap it and whatever it comes out, it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stinson shared what she hoped visitors to the Black Saturday Extravaganza would remember.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want them to take away that they know they got something from a small business that\u2019s unique and they will not find this anywhere else,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we need to support our small businesses.
