{"id":414249,"date":"2025-11-30T03:37:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T03:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/414249\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T03:37:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T03:37:13","slug":"another-skunk-captured-at-hilo-harbor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/414249\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Skunk Captured At Hilo Harbor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(BIVN)<\/strong> \u2013 Another skunk has been captured in Hilo; the second this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture inspectors from the Hawai\u2018i Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity (DAB) captured the skunk near Hilo Harbor on November 27.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of DAB\u2019s Plant Quarantine Branch (PQB) inspectors in Hilo received a second-hand report from a stevedore at Hilo Harbor yesterday that his relative saw a skunk that morning on Kanoelehua Avenue and tried to run it over but missed,\u201d a Friday news release from the Hawai\u02bbi DAB stated. \u201cThe person said he saw the skunk run under a fence at the Hilo shipyard. PQB inspectors immediately began searching the area, spotted the skunk and used a net to capture the animal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigislandvideonews.com\/2025\/11\/11\/skunk-captured-at-hilo-harbor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first skunk that was spotted at Hilo Harbor<\/a> was captured on November 7th.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2025-11-10-skunk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104992\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2025-11-10-skunk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-104992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo of the Hilo skunk provided by the Hawai\u02bbi Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth skunks were humanely euthanized for rabies testing,\u201d the DAB wrote. \u201cTests for the skunk captured on November 7 were negative for rabies. Results for the skunk captured yesterday are pending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From the Hawai\u02bbi DAB:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Skunks are prohibited in Hawai\u2018i. They are avid egg-eaters and would pose a threat to Hawai\u2018i\u2019s native ground-nesting birds if they become established. They inhabit the mainland U.S., Canada, South America, Mexico and other parts of the world. In the U.S., they are recognized as one of the four primary wild carriers of rabies, a fatal viral disease of mammals that is often transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Hawai\u2018i is the only state in the U.S. and one of the few places in the world that is free of rabies.
