PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — South Philadelphia kicked off the holiday season in dazzling fashion Saturday night as thousands packed the 1600 block of South 13th Street for the opening night of the beloved ‘Miracle on South 13th Street’ holiday display.<\/p>\n
The narrow block, already famous for its over-the-top Christmas decorations, once again transformed into a glowing tunnel of twinkling lights, inflatable characters, and festive cheer.<\/p>\n
For many visitors, this is the moment that officially flips the switch on their holiday spirit.<\/p>\n
A massive crowd filled the street as neighbors greeted one another, families posed for photos, and children darted from house to house marveling at each home’s unique setup.<\/p>\n
“I love Christmas, I love the lights, it’s the happiest time of the year for me,” said Monique Goldwire of West Philadelphia, who has made the event a yearly tradition. “Lots of fun, we come here every year, this will be the third year.”<\/p>\n
Many in the crowd echoed that sentiment, noting how each home seems to push the limits of creativity with bigger and brighter displays.<\/p>\n
“We’ve been here for like eight years and every year we come,” Jacob Maderia, of South Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
Children were awestruck by the glowing decorations, pointing excitedly at shimmering ornaments and light wrapped rowhomes.<\/p>\n
“It’s really fun here,” said young visitor Crystal Diorio.<\/p>\n
But adults were equally enchanted, some hopping aboard the mini-train rides with their kids, others simply soaking in the joyful atmosphere.<\/p>\n
A festive parade wound its way through the block, featuring holiday characters including the Grinch, before the man of the hour made his grand entrance. The sight of Santa sent kids into a frenzy, many rushing to line up and share their Christmas wishes.<\/p>\n
“A Barbie doll,” said Mylar Awudu of West Philadelphia when asked what she hopes Santa brings this year.<\/p>\n
Families strolled the block slowly, savoring each display and snapping photos to mark the moment.<\/p>\n
“I’m having a bunch of fun, outrageous, with my granddaughters,” Santiago said.<\/p>\n
For longtime neighbors, the tradition remains a highlight of living on the block.<\/p>\n
“It’s great, it’s the best way to kick off the season,” Maderia said.<\/p>\n
‘The Miracle on South 13th Street’ display runs nightly from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. through January 1. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
