{"id":414481,"date":"2025-11-30T06:10:42","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T06:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/414481\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T06:10:42","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T06:10:42","slug":"mass-timber-adds-visual-warmth-to-british-columbia-ice-arena-by-hcma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/414481\/","title":{"rendered":"Mass timber adds visual warmth to British Columbia ice arena by HCMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre was designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/hcma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HCMA Architecture + Design<\/a> to depart from the &#8220;dated model&#8221; of typical ice arenas, which tend to be cold, windowless and framed with steel.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/sports-centres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recreational centre<\/a> is located in the emerging Southgate community in Burnaby, a city near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/vancouver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vancouver<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274842 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x602.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1670\"  \/>HCMA Architecture + Design has completed the The Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre ice rink<\/p>\n<p>The 8,547-square-metre building was designed by local firm <a href=\"https:\/\/hcma.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HCMA Architecture + Design<\/a> to contain a pair of National Hockey League-sized ice rinks, along with community facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The facility prioritises the public experience, offering a high-performance ice arena alongside a vibrant, accessible and inclusive community hub,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274838 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x569.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre in Vancouver\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1580\"  \/>It contains NFL-sized ice rinks, along with community facilities<\/p>\n<p>The centre was named in honour of Rosemary Brown, a Canadian politician and longtime advocate for social justice and equality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The recreation centre embodies her legacy, standing as a place for all Burnaby residents to gather, play and compete,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274839 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x692.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre in Vancouver\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1921\"  \/>It was designed to reject &#8220;dated model&#8221; of ice arenas<\/p>\n<p>A key priority for the project was to reject\u00a0 &#8220;the dated model of freezing cold, windowless, steel-trussed ice arenas, dedicated solely to sport,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p>The team conceived a building with an angular form and faceted roof. A large portion of the exterior is clad in standing-seam black <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/metal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metal<\/a> panels.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274835 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x731.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre in Vancouver\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2029\"  \/>It features a faceted roof<\/p>\n<p>L-shaped in plan, the building contains two ice rinks separated by a multi-purpose area referred to as a &#8220;lobby&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The rinks are arranged in a non-traditional way due to the site&#8217;s tight footprint. But the arrangement has benefits, as it creates openness between the different zones and forms a &#8220;friendly, animated elevation&#8221; along the street, the studio said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274844 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x569.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1579\"  \/>It was constructed using glue-laminated beams and columns<\/p>\n<p>For the structural system, the team used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wood<\/a> at every turn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wood plays an integral role in the character of the centre, symbolising warmth and durability, and also ensuring quick, efficient assembly on the challenging, compact site,&#8221; HCMA Architecture + Design said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274845 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>It contains auxiliary spaces such as viewing areas and concessions<\/p>\n<p>The lobby features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/glued-laminated-timber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glue-laminated<\/a> beams and columns, which are visible to passers-by through large windows. Nail-laminated timber was used for the lobby&#8217;s decking.<\/p>\n<p>A hybrid steel-and-timber system was used for the roof. This system enabled a &#8220;complex geometry&#8221; and the addition of north-facing clerestories, which usher in natural light.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274841 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre in Vancouver\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Red was used as a highlight colour<\/p>\n<p>The ice rinks have walls made of painted drywall and acoustic metal decking. The flooring is a mix of polished concrete and skate-proof rubber, and the ceiling is lined with long-format <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/leds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LED<\/a> luminaires.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the two rinks, the centre has viewing areas, multipurpose rooms, concessions, a skate shop and a flexible area for activities like yoga and pilates. There are also numerous changing rooms for the players.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274846 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Accessibility was a priority in its design<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the colour palette, white and grey are paired with dashes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/red\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">red<\/a>, which add a sense of energy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/accessible-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Accessibility<\/a> and inclusivity were top priorities, with inclusive design elements extending to &#8220;every aspect of the facility&#8221;, the team said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/02\/05\/hcma-elementary-school-vancouver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hcma-elementary-school-vancouver-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"w\u0259k\u0313\u02b7an\u0313\u0259s t\u0259 syaq\u02b7\u0259m by HCMA\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Mass timber forms structural system of Vancouver school by HCMA\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These elements include Braille signage, wide circulation paths, high contrast way-finding, and accessible and gender-neutral washrooms and changing rooms.<\/p>\n<p>The ice rinks can also be used for sledge hockey, a form of ice hockey for players with physical disabilities who can&#8217;t play the stand-up version of the sport.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274837 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rosemary-brown-recreation-centre-vancouver-hmca-architecture-design_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre in Vancouver\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>It was designed to foster community<\/p>\n<p>Paul Fast, a principal at HCMA, said the centre is meant to be more than an ice arena.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a space designed to foster community,&#8221;
