{"id":414812,"date":"2025-11-30T09:53:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T09:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/414812\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T09:53:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T09:53:12","slug":"where-wnba-labor-negotiations-stand-as-first-extended-deadline-nears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/414812\/","title":{"rendered":"Where WNBA labor negotiations stand as first extended deadline nears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Negotiations for a new WNBA collective bargaining agreement remain ongoing as the next deadline for a new deal draws near.<\/p>\n<p>League officials and representatives from the Women\u2019s National Basketball Players Association were scheduled to meet through the weekend ahead of Sunday\u2019s 11:59 p.m. Eastern deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Whether a potential work stoppage could happen remains uncertain, though players said throughout the summer that they were preparing for such a scenario.<\/p>\n<p>If a deal isn\u2019t reached by the end-of-the-month deadline, it doesn\u2019t necessarily mean the league will shut down. <\/p>\n<p>The two sides can agree to another extension, or the league can operate status quo as talks remain ongoing.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5585997;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37801423\" width=\"920\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2025-wnba-commissioner-cathy-engelbert-112752597.jpg\" alt=\"WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert speaks at a podium during the 2025 WNBA Draft.\" class=\"wp-image-37801423\"  \/>WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert is pictured April 14. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The current CBA was set to expire at the end of last month, though both sides agreed to a 30-day extension \u2014 essentially moving the deadline to the end of November.<\/p>\n<p>Updated proposals from each side have been exchanged, but an agreement has yet to be reached.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent known proposal from the league included a max salary of more than $1.1 million \u2014 a figure that represents the potential earnings based on a combination of players\u2019 base salary and revenue sharing, according to multiple reports.<\/p>\n<p>Front Office Sports also reported this month the supermax base salary would still be in the ballpark of $800,000 to $850,000.<\/p>\n<p>Under that known proposal, the new league minimum would be more than $220,000 with an average of more than $460,000.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s still obviously a large increase from the current CBA as the league\u2019s current supermax is $249,244 and the veteran minimum is $78,831. <\/p>\n<p>But the players may argue the increase is not equal to the league\u2019s booming valuation, with some franchises being valued at north of $400 million.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest sticking points in negotiations has centered on revenue sharing.<\/p>\n<p>The WNBA has said it\u2019s proposed an \u201cuncapped\u201d revenue sharing model. <\/p>\n<p>But the union is pushing for a model where players\u2019 salaries are determined by revenue. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an idea that\u2019s similar to the NBA\u2019s revenue sharing model in which salary cap is determined by the league\u2019s basketball-related income.<\/p>\n<p>Players are also pursuing improved benefits in this round of CBA negotiations. <\/p>\n<p>They also want roster expansion, a softer salary cap and to codify charter travel, which was approved by the league in 2024 but not officially written into the current CBA.<\/p>\n<p>The WNBA has said numerous times that this will be a \u201ctransformational\u201d deal, but the two sides have different views on what that would look like.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCovering the Liberty like never before\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Madeline Kenney&#8217;s Inside the Liberty, a weekly Sports+ newsletter.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>While the WNBA has never canceled games due to labor disputes, it\u2019s not unusual for negotiations to go beyond a current deal\u2019s deadline.<\/p>\n<p>During the last CBA cycle, the league and WNBPA didn\u2019t ratify a deal until January 2020.<\/p>\n<p>But the league\u2019s offseason events \u2014 including two expansion drafts, free agency and college draft \u2014 will be put on hold until a new CBA is finalized.<\/p>\n<p>The Golden State Valkyries\u2019 expansion draft took place Dec. 6, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Free agency starts in late January, while the college draft isn\u2019t until April.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Negotiations for a new WNBA collective bargaining agreement remain ongoing as the next deadline for a new deal&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":414813,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[49],"tags":[1520,62,67,132,68,232,109349],"class_list":{"0":"post-414812","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-wnba","8":"tag-new-york-liberty","9":"tag-sports","10":"tag-united-states","11":"tag-unitedstates","12":"tag-us","13":"tag-wnba","14":"tag-wnba-free-agency"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115638043403817689","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/414812","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=414812"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/414812\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/414813"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=414812"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=414812"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=414812"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
