{"id":414873,"date":"2025-11-30T10:38:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T10:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/414873\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T10:38:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T10:38:13","slug":"roman-catholic-church-joins-corruption-protests-in-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/414873\/","title":{"rendered":"Roman Catholic church joins corruption protests in the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA, Philippines (AP) \u2014 Thousands of demonstrators including from the Roman Catholic church clergy protested in the Philippines on Sunday, calling for the swift prosecution of top legislators and officials implicated in a corruption scandal that has buffeted the Asian democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Left-wing groups led a separate protest in Manila\u2019s main park with a blunt demand for all implicated government officials to immediately resign and face prosecution.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/philippines-flood-control-corruption-investigation-22e4c3eab4b8ef0880b625e17e290cce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.<\/a> has been scrambling to quell <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/philippines-flood-control-corruption-protests-d390012c4eb5c37fc906b4fdc53e14fb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public outrage<\/a> over the massive corruption blamed for substandard, defective or non-existent flood control projects across an archipelago long prone to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tropical-storm-trami-philippines-85a28c058b1f4685033ab02d34782acf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deadly flooding<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/the-definitive-source\/behind-the-news\/covering-the-monster-typhoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extreme weather<\/a> in tropical Asia.<\/p>\n<p>More than 17,000 police officers were deployed in metropolitan Manila to secure the separate protests. Police said about 5,000 demonstrators mostly wearing white joined before noon.<\/p>\n<p>They demanded that members of Congress, officials and construction company owners behind thousands of anomalous flood control projects in recent years be imprisoned and ordered to return the government funds they stole. A protester wore a shirt with a blunt message: \u201cNo mercy for the greedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf money is stolen, that\u2019s a crime, but if dignity and lives are taken away, these are sins against fellow human beings, against the country but, most importantly, against God,\u201d said the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/magsaysay-awards-philippines-india-maldives-4b949afe4fcd53038c7407a466788dff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev. Flavie Villanueva<\/a>, a Catholic priest, who has helped many families of impoverished drug suspects killed under former President Rodrigo Duterte\u2019s crackdowns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJail all the corrupt and jail all the killers,\u201d Villanueva told the crowd of protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Since Marcos first raised alarm over the flood control anomalies in his state of the nation address before Congress in July, at least seven public works officers have been <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/philippines-flood-control-corruption-zaldy-co-8eb573f422425a862d69ff84fce0e18b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jailed<\/a> for illegal use of public funds and other graft charges in one flood control project anomaly alone.
