For years, the agency has been paying out more benefits than it takes in via payroll taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Scripps News<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/11\/24\/social-security-payments-november-26-2025\/87381845007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Security payments<\/a> follow a normal schedule in December and will be the last check before\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/personalfinance\/2025\/10\/24\/2026-social-security-cola-inflation-increase-medicare\/86794713007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the upcoming cost-of-living increase takes effect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/personalfinance\/retirement\/2025\/11\/20\/medicare-2026-social-security-cola\/87378706007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Security<\/a>\u00a0benefits \u2013 paid mostly to recipients who are older or retired \u2013 are typically paid on Wednesdays. If your birthday falls between the first and 10th days of the month, your payments are issued on the second Wednesday of the month (this month, that lands on Dec. 10), according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10031-2025.pdf?ftag=MSFd61514f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Security Administration\u2019s calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th get paid on the third Wednesday (Dec. 17), and those born after the 20th of the month are paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month (Dec. 24), according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10031-2025.pdf?ftag=MSFd61514f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SSA calendar<\/a>. Social Security recipients who began getting benefits before May 1997 are paid on Dec. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Following the December payments, recipients will get bigger checks, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/personalfinance\/2025\/10\/24\/2026-social-security-cola-inflation-increase-medicare\/86794713007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment<\/a>, or COLA, increase. Payments will rise by about $56, on average, per month, when the COLA takes effect in January 2026, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ssa.gov\/social-security-announces-benefit-increase-for-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Security Administration said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Epitaph for the penny: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/11\/28\/with-the-penny-going-away-how-to-know-if-you-have-one-thats-valuable\/87506467007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">With the penny going away, what should you do with the ones in your coin jar?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Social Security payment schedule for December 2025 and January 2026<\/p>\n<p>The Social Security Administration\u2019s calendars of benefit payments for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10031-2025.pdf?ftag=MSFd61514f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10031-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026<\/a>\u00a0are available online so you can check the schedules for budgeting purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Regular Social Security retirement benefits for December will be sent out on the SSA\u2019s usual schedule:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wednesday, Dec 10:<\/strong>\u00a0Birth dates between the first and 10th of the month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wednesday,\u00a0Dec. 17:<\/strong>\u00a0Birth dates between the 11th and 20th of the month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wednesday, Dec. 24:<\/strong>\u00a0Birth dates between the 21st and 31st of the month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>January 2026 Social Security retirement benefits will also be sent out on the SSA\u2019s usual schedule:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wednesday, Jan. 14:<\/strong>\u00a0Birth dates between the first and 10th of the month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wednesday,\u00a0Jan. 21:<\/strong>\u00a0Birth dates between the 11th and 20th of the month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wednesday, Jan. 28:<\/strong>\u00a0Birth dates between the 21st and 31st of the month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SSI payment schedule for December and into 2026<\/p>\n<p>Recipients of\u00a0Supplemental Security Income checks\u00a0are typically issued payments on the first business day of the month, Monday, Dec. 1. Since Jan. 1, 2026 is a holiday (New Year\u2019s Day), payments for January will be Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. SSI checks will be sent out on the following dates into early 2026, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10031-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the SSA calendar<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monday, Dec. 1, 2025 (Check for December 2025)<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025 (Check for January 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Friday, Jan. 30, 2026 (Check for February 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Friday, Feb. 27, 2026 (Check for March 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday, April 1, 2026 (Check for April 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Friday, May 1, 2026 (Check for May 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Monday, June 1, 2026 (Check for June 2026)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What is SSI?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/07\/29\/ssi-payment-check-schedule-august-2025\/85381471007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Supplemental Security Income<\/a>\u00a0(SSI) is a benefit program for persons with limited income or resources who are aged 65 or older, and who are blind or have a qualifying disability. Children with qualifying disabilities are also eligible, according to the SSA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/faq.ssa.gov\/en-us\/Topic\/article\/KA-02274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>.
