There is no backup stadium if the main ice hockey arena for the\u00a0Milan Cortina Winter Games<\/a>\u00a0is not ready on time.<\/p>\n

Construction on the arena that is set to welcome\u00a0NHL players back to the Olympics<\/a>\u00a0for the first time in more than a decade is behind schedule and its completion is going\u00a0right down to the wire<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A test event at the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena \u2014 the new, 16,000-seat venue on the outskirts of Milan \u2014 had to be moved, and new test events aren’t scheduled until Jan. 9-11.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no plan B,\u201d Andrea Francisi, the chief games operations officer for Milan Cortina, told the Associated Press on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo necessarily we have to be able to organize the competition in an impeccable manner at Santagiulia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first scheduled Olympic hockey game at the arena is a women\u2019s preliminary round match on Feb. 5, one day before the opening ceremony.<\/p>\n

Usually, new Olympic venues are tested at least the year before hosting medal events. And with a large hockey arena it\u2019s not just about the ice and making sure the playing surface is ready and safe. It\u2019s also about testing concession stands, bathrooms and everything else inside a brand new arena.<\/p>\n

Francisi admitted there is \u201cno precise date\u201d for the venue to be handed over to local organizers, but he is confident \u201cfor the moment\u201d that it will be ready for the Olympics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are daily updates in the sense that our team is there working every day,\u201d Francisi said. \u201cThe companies which are involved with the building of the facility have sped up their work significantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re monitoring all that daily together with them, there\u2019s great collaboration between us, we\u2019re creating a coordinated plan between their work and our preparations and for the moment we\u2019re healthily optimistic, but 100% we\u2019ll do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The men\u2019s\u00a0Olympic hockey tournament<\/a>\u00a0is scheduled from Feb. 11-22. The women\u2019s tournament runs from Feb. 5-19.<\/p>\n
