{"id":415454,"date":"2025-11-30T17:01:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T17:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/415454\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T17:01:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T17:01:18","slug":"long-lost-rubens-painting-depicting-jesus-christ-sells-for-2-7m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/415454\/","title":{"rendered":"Long-lost Rubens painting depicting Jesus Christ sells for $2.7M"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VERSAILLES, France (AP) \u2014 A long-lost painting by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/art-restoration-rubens-painting-antwerp-baroque-flemish-23e29b6993c6e57264dd885c61760c4b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens<\/a>, which was hidden for more than four centuries, sold at 2.3 million euros ($2.7 million) at an auction Sunday in Versailles.<\/p>\n<p>The painting was recently found in a private townhouse in Paris. It depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>It was part of a French collection and was initially thought to be from one of the many <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rubens-art-garden-antwerp-renovation-baroque-faf386adc191944dc278774ffad3f09e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rubens workshops<\/a> that existed at the time. The artwork was rarely valued at more than 10,000 euros ($11,500). <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI immediately had a hunch about this painting, and I did everything I could to try to have it authenticated,\u201d auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat told The Associated Press. \u201cAnd finally, we managed to have it authenticated by the Rubenianum, which is the Rubens committee in Antwerp.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Nils B\u00fcttner, an expert known for his research on Rubens, explained before the auction that the master often painted crucifictions but rarely depicted \u201cthe crucified Christ as a dead body on the cross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this is the one and only painting showing blood and water coming out of the side wound of Christ, and this is something that Rubens only painted once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"more-section-display-name\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"German scents exhibition combines 1,000 years of fragrances with art and history\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-scents-exhibition-kunstpalast-dusseldorf-b5b31e890264cdbca6c2bc3a695afaab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A woman smells samples during the exhibition &quot;The Secret Power of Scents&quot;, showing the history of scent from antiquity to the present as a sensory experience at the Kunstpalast art museum in Duesseldorf, Germany, Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025. It said microscopic examination of the paint layers revealed not only white, black, and red pigments in the areas representing flesh, but also blue and green pigments, whose use is typical in Rubens\u2019 depictions of human skin.<\/p>\n<p>Art expert Eric Turquin told a packed house the painting had virtually disappeared in the early 1600s.
