BIG studio<\/p>\nBrooklyn\u2019s Gowanus Canal, the once-smelly waterway that was long a punch line for comedians, will soon welcome one of the Big Apple\u2019s largest and most glamorous \u201cwellness\u201d centers.<\/p>\n
Life Time, creator of 185 \u201cathletic country clubs\u201d including 13 in the Big Apple,\u00a0signed a lease for a mammoth health-and-fitness mecca at Charney Companies\u2019 and Tavros\u2019 175 Third St. \u2013 with 85,000 square feet indoors on three levels, plus a 13,000 square-foot rooftop pool deck.<\/p>\n
Soon to be the largest building in Gowanus, 175 Third St. is part of the development partners\u2019\u00a0five-building campus called Gowanus Wharf. Thanks to\u00a0rezoning to spur creation of 9,000 new rental apartments, and a federally-backed cleanup, tenants have flocked to new towers along the once-fetid canal, which has emerged as the neighborhood\u2019s scenic centerpiece.<\/p>\n

Charney development head Rosie Tilley said, \u201cLife Time\u2019s national reputation for quality and excellence elevates the experience we\u2019re\u00a0creating at 175 Third Street.\u201d<\/p>\n
Life Time\u00a0chief of property development Parham Javaheri called it \u201cthe marquee building we were looking for in Gowanus.\u201d He said the \u201cmega-deal\u201d would include \u201cthree amazing indoor pickleball courts, a \u2018wet suite\u2019 with sauna, steam, infrared and cold plunge, and the rooftop pool deck\u201d with features that will make it useable year-round.<\/p>\n
Javaheri said he first flipped for the then-undeveloped location at Third Street and Third Avenue before COVID. \u201cI said, \u2018Someone\u2019s going to buy this site and we will be the retail at the base.\u2019 It would serve residents not only in Gowanus but from Carroll Gardens and Park Slope.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast year, I think it was at ICSC, we had a brief meeting between my team and Sam Charney. It was a great connection. They had a vision for their project and we shared their vision to create something truly unique.\u201d<\/p>\n
