INGLEWOOD, Calif. \u2014 Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert suffered a broken bone in his left hand during Sunday\u2019s 31-14 win<\/a> over the Las Vegas Raiders, according to coach Jim Harbaugh.<\/p>\n

Herbert will undergo surgery Monday, Harbaugh said. When asked if Herbert will miss any time, Harbaugh said, \u201cI don\u2019t know about that. We\u2019ll see where the week takes us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Herbert was more optimistic. In Week 14, the Chargers host the Philadelphia Eagles for a prime-time Monday night game, which will be one week from the procedure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m treating it as if I\u2019m playing on Monday,\u201d Herbert said of the Eagles game.<\/p>\n

Herbert added that doctors were \u201cvery hopeful\u201d about him playing in the Eagles game.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s one of those things where you just stabilize it,\u201d Herbert said.<\/p>\n

Herbert said he would miss the game only if doctors told him it would be a \u201ca very unwise decision\u201d for him to play.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see tomorrow, and we\u2019ll get a feel for it,\u201d Herbert said.<\/p>\n

Herbert suffered the injury on the Chargers\u2019 opening offensive drive. He scrambled to his left on a first down in the red zone. Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn made an open-field tackle on Herbert and drove the Chargers quarterback into the SoFi Stadium turf.<\/p>\n

Herbert stood up after the play and looked at his left, non-throwing hand. Herbert said the broken bone occurred at some point during this tackle, but he did not know what specifically caused it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it must have been either a helmet or something like that,\u201d Herbert said. \u201cBut I\u2019d have to look at it to be exact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Herbert stayed in the game. On the next play, he threw a touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston that gave the Chargers an early 7-0 lead.<\/p>\n

When Herbert got to the sideline, he took a seat on the bench. Trainers came over and had a short discussion with Herbert. Herbert then jogged into the locker room with the trainers, where he remained for the beginning of the next offensive drive.<\/p>\n

Backup Trey Lance replaced Herbert for eight plays. Herbert then returned from the locker room with a white glove on his left hand. His middle and ring fingers were taped together. After the game, Herbert said the training staff also applied a \u201chard cast\u201d to the hand.<\/p>\n

Herbert came back into the game with 11:55 remaining in the second quarter. He played the rest of the game as the Chargers coasted to their eighth win of the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is what it is,\u201d Herbert said. \u201cI did my best to go out there and take care of business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Herbert did not take a snap from under center after the injury, 44 snaps in total. The Chargers operated exclusively out of shotgun and pistol formations. They put up 341 yards of offense, including 180 total rushing yards from running backs Kimani Vidal and Jaret Patterson. Herbert completed 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s as tough as they come,\u201d Harbaugh said of Herbert.<\/p>\n

Herbert said Lance was ready to come into the game if the Chargers wanted to run under-center plays, such as in goal-line situations or the four-minute drill. But that was not necessary.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Herbert broke a finger on his left hand against the Raiders in Week 4. He played through that injury while wearing a splint on his middle left finger.<\/p>\n

He did not miss a game.<\/p>\n
