{"id":417075,"date":"2025-12-01T11:28:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T11:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/417075\/"},"modified":"2025-12-01T11:28:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T11:28:17","slug":"hasina-and-tulip-siddiq-found-guilty-in-corruption-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/417075\/","title":{"rendered":"Hasina and Tulip Siddiq found guilty in corruption case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) \u2014 A court in Bangladesh\u2019s capital sentenced ousted <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/sheikh-hasina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina<\/a> to five years in prison and her niece, British Labour Party lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, to two years in prison Monday for corruption involving a government land project.<\/p>\n<p>Rabiul Alam, the judge of Dhaka\u2019s Special Judge\u2019s Court, said Hasina misused her power as prime minister while Siddiq was guilty of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-tulip-siddiq-trial-hasina-yunus-086d2ddc368f878d0a0e6b9209909d5c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corruptly influencing her aunt<\/a> in helping her mother and two siblings get a land plot in a government project. Siddiq\u2019s mother, Sheikh Rehana, was given seven years in prison and was considered the prime participant in the case. <\/p>\n<p>The judge also fined the three $813 each and ordered the cancellation of the allotted plot for Rehana. <\/p>\n<p>There are 14 other suspects.<\/p>\n<p>Khan Mohammed Mainul Hasan, the corruption watchdog\u2019s prosecutor, said they had sought life in prison for the prime defendants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expected life sentences, (but) that did not happen. We will consult with the commission for our next course of action,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hours after Monday\u2019s verdict, Hasina\u2019s Awami League party in a statement sent to The Associated Press said the verdict was \u201centirely predictable,\u201d and that the anti-corruption watchdog body \u201citself is a political mechanism used for political ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe allegations against Sheikh Hasina, her sister, and many others including members of her immediate and wider family are firmly denied &#8230; The process fails to pass any reasonable test of judicial fairness \u2013 a point that has been made forcefully by both local and international legal experts,\u201d the statement said. <\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a50000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Stay up to date with the news and the best of AP by following our WhatsApp channel.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"ap-btn-whatsapp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029Va7Tv2j59PwNEyqGCi1y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n      Follow on<br \/>\n      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761588853_344_\" alt=\"WhatsApp\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The prosecution said Siddiq was tried as a Bangladeshi citizen and authorities said they obtained a passport, her national identity card and tax number. But Siddiq disputed the claim and said she is a British citizen, not a Bangladeshi citizen.<\/p>\n<p>Siddiq, who represents London\u2019s Hampstead and Highgate areas in Britain\u2019s Parliament, had earlier denied the allegations and said the trial was a farce built on \u201cfabricated accusations and driven by a clear political vendetta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In January, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-uk-tulip-siddiq-resigns-a8591a1c05fbfbed7547c6c25a8b1657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Siddiq resigned<\/a> as a government minister in the Cabinet of Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/keir-starmer-elon-musk-far-right-84d1813442f8f155a59b7349fac47db7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keir Starmer<\/a> under pressure because of her ties to her aunt. Siddiq had said she had been cleared of wrongdoing but was quitting as economic secretary to the Treasury because the issue was becoming \u201ca distraction from the work of the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hasan, the prosecutor, said Monday they would reach out to the British government through Bangladesh\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Siddiq\u2019s verdict. <\/p>\n<p>Hasina was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/bangladeshs-ousted-pm-sheikh-hasina-sentenced-to-death-for-student-uprising-crackdown-579caf163b0042eba7a3a13121212b55\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced to death<\/a> in November for crimes against humanity involving the crackdown on the mass uprising that ended her 15-year rule last year. She lives in exile in India, and all of her trials have been conducted in absentia.<\/p>\n<p>She and the others in the case decided Monday did not appoint any defense lawyers to represent them.<\/p>\n<p>Rehana is staying outside the country and Siddiq\u2019s two siblings are also abroad as they face other charges involving last year\u2019s uprising. <\/p>\n<p>In three separate cases involving the same township project, a separate court on Nov. 27 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-sheikh-hasina-trial-yunus-ced2a3afaee074549a401d9de73f6cfa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced Hasina to 21 years in jail<\/a>.
