Everyday purchases are no longer seen as items or experiences, but as trade-offs for time, freedom, or long-term investments. One person described seeing a friend’s new watch and immediately thinking, \u201cThat’s 6 months of VTI contributions.\u201d They\u2019re referring to investing in the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n Others shared how they mentally convert money into hours of work, years of early retirement, or even how many index funds they could buy. \u201cI used to think \u2018for every $33k I save and invest, I can spend $1k per year forever,’\u201d one commenter said. \u201cIronically, now that I\u2019m FI, the math has flipped. I silence my inner frugal bastard<\/a> with \u2018We can absolutely afford x.\u201d<\/p>\n Some look at it through a more emotional lens. \u201cAnything pricey and my mind goes to how many useless meetings am I gonna have to sit through to pay for this,\u201d one person said. \u201cExcept for vacations! Others agreed, saying they felt guilt over any purchase that didn\u2019t directly align with their values.<\/p>\n Still, many in the thread advocated for a middle ground. One person said, \u201cIt\u2019s OK to have nice things. You just can\u2019t have ALL the things.\u201d<\/p>\n The conversation shifted heavily into car purchases\u2013a common FIRE dilemma. Some justified buying newer cars<\/a> due to rising maintenance costs, safety features, or limited used car inventory. Others stuck to the numbers. \u201cI see that truck and say, well that\u2019s almost a third of my annual bonus or 300ish hours of work,\u201d one user calculated. Now I focus on experiences and travel to make those memories I didn’t get as a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n For some, the biggest change isn\u2019t in the bank account, it\u2019s in their worldview. \u201cCommitting to FIRE really is a watershed moment. If you are doing it right, you and your world will never be the same again,\u201d one commenter wrote.<\/p>\n That lens also comes with challenges. Some admitted to going overboard, becoming so frugal that they alienated friends and family. One person warned, \u201cDon’t\u2026 lose the forest through the trees. You can have a massive bank account and still be abjectly miserable. If that’s the case, what was the point of it all?\u201d<\/p>\n As one early retiree put it simply, \u201cYou can\u2019t take your money with you when you die.
