{"id":418358,"date":"2025-12-02T01:00:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T01:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/418358\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T01:00:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T01:00:17","slug":"canada-joins-eu-defense-fund-in-effort-to-diversify-military-spending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/418358\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada joins EU defense fund in effort to diversify military spending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Canada has joined a major <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-defense-ukraine-russia-us-military-spending-dbc6133a2412ec02adf87078f2f2f5cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union defense fund<\/a>, Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s office said Monday, as the country looks to diversify its military spending away from the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The plan allows Canadian defense companies access to a 150 billion euro ($170 billion) EU loan program, known as Security Action for Europe, or SAFE. That would allow Canadians firms to secure cheap, EU-backed loans to procure military equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada\u2019s participation in SAFE will fill key capability gaps, expand markets for Canadian suppliers, and attract European defense investment into Canada,\u201d Carney said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Canada is the first non-EU country to gain access.<\/p>\n<p>Carney has said he intends to diversify Canada\u2019s procurement and enhance the country\u2019s relationship with the EU. He has previously said that no more will over 70 cents of every dollar of Canadian military capital spending go to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s actions \u2014 including launching <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-trade-trump-europe-canada-mexico-china-06f20e415ec7c706194511c84350b84b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a trade war<\/a> and suggesting Canada become the 51st U.S. state \u2014 infuriated Canadians and created the political environment for Carney to win the job of prime minister after promising to confront Trump\u2019s increased aggression.<\/p>\n<p>Carney\u2019s government continues to review the purchase of U.S. F-35 fighter jets to explore other options. Carney has said the potential for having more production in Canada is a factor. A proposal by Sweden\u2019s Saab promised that assembly and maintenance of the Saab Gripen fighter jet would take place in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Canada has said it will meet NATO\u2019s military <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nato-luxembourg-defense-spending-military-budgets-255795eaf8fddff9a05e7b25b678bdbb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spending guideline<\/a> by early next year.<\/p>\n<p>Talks on the U.K. joining the SAFE fund <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uk-eu-defense-fund-talks-cfa31ff855094cb9057fe79264319138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ended without agreement<\/a> last week.
