According to the NFL transaction wire for Monday, the Detroit Lions have placed Arnold on injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury, per the team’s injury report. Earlier in the year, Arnold missed two games with a shoulder injury that was initially believed to be season-threatening. It’s not clear if this is an aggravation of that injury, but whatever it is, it will sideline Arnold for the majority—if not the entirety—of the remaining 2025 season. The earliest he can return is the regular season finale against the Chicago Bears.

UPDATE: Per Tom Pelissero, Arnold is undergoing season-ending surgery.

Arnold, the team’s first-round pick in 2024, has only been healthy enough to play in eight games this season. In addition to the shoulder injuries, he missed two games with a concussion. Prior to the injuries, it had been an up-and-down season for Arnold. After a strong training camp, Arnold struggled out of the gate in coverage. Some of the penalty issues returned (three for the season) and there were some coverage lapses. That said, it did look like he was beginning to turn things around before the injuries started to mount.

Without Arnold, the Lions are likely to rely upon D.J. Reed, Amik Robertson, and Rock Ya-Sin as their top three cornerbacks. Reed was signed this offseason to a three-year, $48 million deal and recently returned from a hamstring injury. Robertson has played in all 12 games for the Lions—starting eight—and has split time on the outside and in the slot. Ya-Sin has been a valuable depth piece, making three spot starts throughout the year.

This secondary will have its hands full this week against a Dallas Cowboys offense that features top-tier receivers George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb.

The rough sophomore season for Terrion Arnold continues.
