{"id":418984,"date":"2025-12-02T07:29:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T07:29:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/418984\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T07:29:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T07:29:13","slug":"2025-gotham-film-awards-winners-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/418984\/","title":{"rendered":"2025 Gotham Film Awards Winners List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPaul Thomas Anderson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/one-battle-after-another-review-leonardo-dicaprio-1236372737\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Battle After Another<\/a> won the top prize of best feature at the 2025 Gotham Film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/awards\/\" id=\"auto-tag_awards_1\" data-tag=\"awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Awards<\/a>, and Jafar Panahi had a big night just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/iran-sentences-jafar-panahi-prison-one-year-absentia-1236438268\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hours after Iran sentenced the dissident filmmaker to a year in prison in absentia<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPanahi\u2019s film, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/it-was-just-an-accident-review-jafar-panahi-iran-1236222539\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It Was Just an Accident<\/a>, won all three awards for which it was nominated at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/gotham-awards\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gotham-awards_1\" data-tag=\"gotham-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gotham Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAccepting his first prize of the evening for best original screenplay, Panahi said in part (via a translator) to applause in the room, \u201cI would like to dedicate the honor of this award to independent filmmakers in Iran and around the world \u2014 filmmakers who keep the camera rolling in silence, without support, and at times by risking everything they have, only with their faith in truth and humanity. I hope that this dedication will be considered a small tribute to all filmmakers who have been deprived of the right to see and to be seen, but continue to create and exist.\u201d He returned to the stage shortly after when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/it-was-just-an-accident\/\" id=\"auto-tag_it-was-just-an-accident_1\" data-tag=\"it-was-just-an-accident\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It Was Just an Accident<\/a>\u00a0won for best international feature. He later won best director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the latter speech, he recalled a short film that he made as a student that, in the edit, \u201cturned into nonsense.\u201d He stole and destroyed the dailies so the film would never be released under his name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m very happy that I made that decision. If I had not done that back then, I would not have been standing here tonight,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I am also happy that I did not cut up my last film, that I did not destroy my last film and I am still here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDouble nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/my-fathers-shadow-review-nigeria-sope-dirisu-1236220935\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My Father\u2019s Shadow<\/a> also swept its categories, winning the two awards for which it was nominated: breakthrough director and lead performance, with an absent Sop\u00e9 D\u00ecr\u00eds\u00f9 winning over such luminaries as Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You), Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon) and Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBest supporting performance went to Sinners\u2018 Wunmi Mosaku, who wasn\u2019t in attendance as she was working, but director Ryan Coogler accepted on her behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/one-battle-after-another\/\" id=\"auto-tag_one-battle-after-another_1\" data-tag=\"one-battle-after-another\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Battle After Another<\/a> won best feature, that was the film\u2019s only win of the night after going into the evening with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/2025-gotham-film-awards-nominations-nominees-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record six nominations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn his best feature acceptance speech, Anderson said he \u201cdidn\u2019t expect this, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe added, trailing off: \u201cI was starting to think \u2014 I don\u2019t know what was going on. But this is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd he revealed that the ceremony\u2019s Dec. 1 date had sentimental significance as well, wishing his longtime partner Maya Rudolph a happy anniversary as he recalled, \u201c24 years ago I met a lady who made me a better filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnderson was also nominated for best director and adapted screenplay, with Benicio Del Toro and Teyana Taylor both nominated in the Gothams\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/gotham-awards-to-adopt-gender-neutral-categories-1234993343\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gender-neutral<\/a> best supporting performance category. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/chase-infiniti-interview-one-battle-after-another-1236366095\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scene stealer Chase Infiniti<\/a> was nominated for breakthrough performer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the best feature category, One Battle After Another was up against four-time nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/if-i-had-legs-id-kick-you-review-rose-byrne-1236117297\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You<\/a>, which went home empty-handed, as well as double nominees Familiar Touch; Hamnet; Sorry, Baby; The Testament of Ann Lee; and Train Dreams, in addition to Bugonia, East of Wall and Lurker. This year, the Gothams upped the number of best feature nominees from five to 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn addition to best feature, If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You went into the night up for best director and original screenplay (Mary Bronstein) and lead performance (Byrne).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAlongside the competitive awards, a number of films and individuals received special tribute honors at the star-studded ceremony, which took place in New York on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/noah-baumbach-director-tribute-gotham-awards-1236408429\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Noah Baumbach received the director tribute<\/a> for his work on Jay Kelly, presented by his co-writer and star on the Netflix film, Emily Mortimer and Adam Sandler, with Mortimer reading from a prepared script and Sandler egging her on (\u201ckeep going, Emily\u201d) and chiming in with jokes, including how he \u201cremember[s] when the Gotham Awards were for low-budget movies,\u201d joking that Jeff Daniels was paid \u201cin potato skins\u201d for Baumbach\u2019s The Squid and the Whale. But the \u201cnew Gothams,\u201d are \u201cpretty good,\u201d Sandler said, praising the \u201cbetter fucking desserts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBaumbach, who lamented having to follow Mortimer and Sandler, said he found himself in a similar position to his titular character in Jay Kelly, the movie star played by George Clooney, \u201clooking forward and backward on his life.\u201d He recalled the advice he received from Ethan Coen (\u201chire a professional cat\u201d after Baumbach shared that a friend was lending him a pet for his film), Peter Bogdanovich, Brian De Palma and Mike Nichols and remembered growing up in New York and going to see movies, dreaming of the day he could make films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI think of my contemporaries, those of us who started in the \u201990s and who are still going today, people who have inspired me and who have fostered a healthy or unhealthy competition depending on my mood,\u201d Baumbach said before joking of his spouse, Greta Gerwig. \u201cI think of the younger, exciting filmmakers who are coming up after me, whom I just find annoying \u2014\u00a0except my wife \u2014\u00a0but kind of my wife too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn closing, he said, \u201cOf all the things that I thought might happen and through some amazing combination of events came true, I think the thing that I\u2019m most proud of is to be called a New York filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe cast of Sinners received the ensemble tribute, presented by Coogler, who mused that he was nervous speaking onstage, making him thankful to have actors to say his lines in his films. He introduced his cast by name as they took the stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tActors Michael B. Jordan, Jayme Lawson and Delroy Lindo spoke on behalf of the cast, with Lindo making an allusion to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/filmmakermagazine.com\/122525-gotham-awards-eliminates-budget-cap\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gotham Awards\u2019 elimination of the budget cap<\/a>, saying of Coogler, \u201cNo matter the budget, Ryan Coogler is an independent filmmaker at heart in his commitment to his vision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhen presenting best feature, presenters Chris Rock and Naomi Watts also took a moment to characterize what makes a Gotham Award-worthy independent film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cToday an independent film isn\u2019t just about the budget or the box office, it\u2019s about telling an independent story, something that isn\u2019t part of a franchise or a multiverse,\u201d Rock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWatts added, \u201cThe old definitions they don\u2019t really apply anymore \u2014 what matters now is perspective, the voice behind the work and the way a film can bring people together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNia DaCosta and Nina Hoss presented Tessa Thompson with the Spotlight tribute for Hedda, with DaCosta and Thompson recalling first meeting a decade ago, when Thompson said she couldn\u2019t have imagined being in one of DaCosta\u2019s films, and adding that she\u2019s \u201calways in awe\u201d of DaCosta\u2019s bravery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFrankenstein\u2018s Guillermo del Toro, Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi received the Vanguard tribute, presented by J.J. Abrams \u2014 as del Toro declared his movie was made \u201cfor humans, by humans\u201d and left the stage with a mic-drop \u201cfuck AI.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKate Hudson and Hugh Jackman received the first musical tribute for Song Sung Blue from director Craig Brewer. Jackman quipped that the honor would make his longtime faux rival Ryan Reynolds \u201cinsanely jealous\u201d before proclaiming that he thinks Hudson will win the Oscar for her work in Song Sung Blue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJulia Roberts and Luca Guadagnino received the Visionary tribute, presented by Roberts\u2019 Three Days of Rain Broadway costar Paul Rudd, for their work together on After the Hunt; and Jeremy Allen White and Scott Cooper were honored with the cultural icon tribute for Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere by Steven Van Zandt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring her acceptance speech with Guadagnino, Roberts praised, \u201ceveryone that is here living their creative dreams, thank you for doing that in a world that seems to be crumbling.
