NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d<\/a> was crowned best feature film and the dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi<\/a> won three awards Monday at the 35th annual Gotham Awards, a starry kickoff to the film industry\u2019s awards season. <\/p>\n

The Gothams, presented by the Gotham Film & Media Institute, aren\u2019t considered an Oscar bellwether. But the black-tie affair, held at Cipriani Wall Street in downtown Manhattan, is known for celebrating smaller films while also dishing out generous helpings of tribute awards to Oscar hopefuls. <\/p>\n

That made \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d a studio release that cost at least $130 million to make, unlike any previous winner at the Gothams. Past winners include indies like \u201cPast Lives,\u201d \u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once\u201d and the surprise 2024 winner, \u201cA Different Man.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI remember when the Gotham Awards were for low-budget movies,\u201d joked Adam Sandler, presenting a tribute to Noah Baumbach. \u201cFor \u2018The Squid and the Whale,\u2019 they paid Jeff Daniels in potato skins.\u201d <\/p>\n

But in 2023, the Gotham Awards dispensed with their $35 million budget cap for films. And this year, \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d a father-daughter tale of multigenerational protest, is widely seen as the best-picture front-runner and the movie to beat at March\u2019s Academy Awards. <\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t expect this, actually,\u201d said Anderson, accepting the award. \u201cI started to think I didn\u2019t know what was going on.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThank you very much, everybody,\u201d added Anderson. \u201cLet\u2019s go home or let\u2019s go to a bar somewhere or something.\u201d <\/p>\n

While the Gothams help the industry get into the swing of awards season, they\u2019re quirkier than bigger-name ceremonies. Small juries select nominees and winners, which often leads to unexpected results. Both of the acting winners on Monday weren\u2019t even in attendance. <\/p>\n

Best lead performance went to Sop\u00e9 D\u00ecr\u00eds\u00f9 for the British-Nigerian drama \u201cMy Father\u2019s Shadow.\u201d<\/a> His award was accepted by the film\u2019s director, Akinola Davies Jr., who also won for breakthrough director. Other nominees in the category included Jessie Buckley (\u201cHamnet\u201d), Jennifer Lawrence (\u201cDie My Love\u201d) and Ethan Hawke (\u201cBlue Moon\u201d). <\/p>\n

Best supporting performance went to Wunmi Mosaku of \u201cSinners,\u201d<\/a> a victory that came over nominees such as Teyana Taylor (\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d), Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd (\u201cSentimental Value\u201d) and Jacob Elordi (\u201cFrankenstein\u201d). \u201cSinners\u201d director Ryan Coogler accepted her award. <\/p>\n

Panahi won three awards for his revenge drama \u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d: best director, best original screenplay and best international film. Earlier Monday, Panahi\u2019s attorney, Mostafa Nili, said the director had been sentenced to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban. <\/p>\n

Panahi was jailed for months shortly before making \u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d and only released after going on a hunger strike<\/a>. In 2010, he was barred from filmmaking or traveling out of Iran. Yet he continued to make films without the government\u2019s permission. Since 2023, and until Monday\u2019s ruling, Panahi had been permitted to leave Iran. In May, his film won the Palme d\u2019Or<\/a> at the Cannes Film Festival. <\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to dedicate the honor of this award to independent filmmakers in Iran and around the world,\u201d said Panahi accepting the screenplay award. \u201cFilmmakers who keep the camera rolling in silence without support and, at times, risking everything they have, only with their faith in truth and humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other winners Monday included Harry Lighton (\u201cPillion\u201d) for adapted screenplay; Abou Sangar\u00e9 (\u201cSouleymane\u2019s Story\u201d) for breakthrough performer; and Julia Loktev\u2019s \u201cMy Undesirable Friends: Part 1 \u2014 Last Air in Moscow\u201d for best documentary. <\/p>\n

Among the tribute honorees were: Guillermo del Toro\u2019s \u201cFrankenstein,\u201d Scott Cooper\u2019s \u201cSpringsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere\u201d; \u201cHedda\u201d star Tessa Thompson; \u201cJay Kelly\u201d director Noah Baumbach; the cast of \u201cSinners\u201d; Luca Guadagnino and Julia Roberts of \u201cAfter the Hunt\u201d; and \u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson.<\/p>\n
