Last year, the country <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3293925\/chinas-logistics-sector-stands-and-delivers-busiest-year-ever-2024?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded a total of 174.5 billion<\/a> express deliveries, a 21 per cent increase from 2023.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The high number of deliveries tracks with China\u2019s large population and the popularity of e-commerce in the country, but the increase does not necessarily mean that Chinese consumers are spending more, according to analysts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cE-commerce has gone up a lot,\u201d said Andy Xie, an independent China economist. \u201cE-commerce creates competitive platforms, more so than the shopping mall. You rely on word of mouth and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/rednote?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">RedNote<\/a>, and then go to e-commerce and discover the lower price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Courier companies saw revenues grow 13 per cent year on year to 1.4 trillion yuan (US$198 billion) in 2024, according to the State Post Bureau.
