A lot of our families are of a refugee-type background. Many have come from Burma, from Myanmar,&#8221; principal Debbie Cottier said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Their journeys are wide and varied. (ABC News: Patrick Stone)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That pride is written on the face of 11-year-old Dilawar, who dreams of becoming a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The school is an amazing place for me to be, and I feel very safe and happy at school,&#8221; Dilawar said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My favourite subject at school is writing because it helps me build up my vocabulary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">His Year 5 classmate Jessica prefers maths but also loves the school and hopes to become a student leader next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Something I like about our school is that there are many different cultures,&#8221; Jessica said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Everyone has a say, and they all get a voice. (ABC News: Billy Cooper)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The common thread is systematic, consistent explicit teaching and the use of data to spot and reverse gaps in knowledge before kids fall behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">More than 60 per cent made above-average progress in literacy and numeracy between Years 3 and 5 compared to students with similar levels of socio-educational advantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s incredibly rewarding. (ABC News: Billy Cooper)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Education analyst and former teacher Trisha Jha from the Centre for Independent Studies said the teaching approach was evidence-based and backed by science.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It would be difficult to point out an example of a school that has had a quick and a sustained improvement in its student results without using explicit instruction,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Ms Jha said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Jha said explicit instruction could turn around Australia&#8217;s overall NAPLAN results, after <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-30\/naplan-national-testing-results\/105581218\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105581218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">figures released in July again<\/a> showed one in three students were not meeting &#8220;challenging but reasonable&#8221; expectations for literacy and numeracy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman of south Asian background and with long black hair sitting at a laptop\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/77f4d10b186b0ecef3008940a6a4e9f2\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Trisha Jha says more schools adopting an explicit teaching approach could turn around student scores. (ABC News: Patrick Stone)<\/p>\n<p>Student progress data and advice for parents<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Changes to the NAPLAN test in 2023 mean this latest data allows parents to see how their children have performed across year levels for the first time in several years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s great to have the student progress data back,&#8221; ACARA CEO Stephen Gniel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It means that we can look at schools in terms of the growth, the ways in which those families and schools have worked with those children over a two-year period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ACARA publishes the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/myschool.edu.au\/\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MySchool website<\/a>, where today&#8217;s data drop can be found.<\/p>\n<p>Why ACARA doesn&#8217;t highlight raw scores\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowVisible__N2zKU\">\n<li>ACARA said many students who attend the schools with the best raw scores have affluent and well-educated parents, which is a big advantage.<\/li>\n<li>It said using raw NAPLAN data to show the &#8220;best performing&#8221; public and private schools can be misleading.<\/li>\n<li>ACARA said praising schools where top students attend, just because they&#8217;re getting high scores mistakes the outcome for the educational input provided by the school.<\/li>\n<li>It said many of these students would do just as well at other schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">MySchool allows parents to track results against &#8220;similar schools&#8221;, which ACARA said was a fairer means of comparisons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Gniel said ranking and comparing schools on raw scores alone, as some media outlets do, was &#8220;misleading&#8221; and &#8220;crude&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said that did not take into account parental advantage, which has been increasingly shown to be crucial in a child&#8217;s success.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Our teachers and principals deserve better than us just ranking them in terms of one data point. Those people are in there every day working with those students,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Mr Gniel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Jha agreed student progress over time and comparing to similar schools were fairer metrics for gauging performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Now we have a sense of what proportion of students are making above-average progress and that&#8217;s a really great indicator of how is this school actually supporting all its students, or not, to make good progress,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tips for parents wanting to learn more about NAPLAN results\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowVisible__N2zKU\">\n<li>Remember NAPLAN is just one data point at one point in time.<\/li>\n<li>Use MySchool rather than media &#8220;league tables&#8221; to compare to similar schools.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the school to see if classrooms are &#8220;calm&#8221; and the learning intentional.<\/li>\n<li>Observe how classrooms are set up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Source: Trisha Jha<\/p>\n<p>Attendance data still not bouncing back<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ACARA has also released attendance data for the first semester of 2025 across all schools, showing an improvement from 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Attendance was 88.8 per cent this year, up from 88.3 per cent in 2024, but still well below the 2019 pre-pandemic level of 91.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Kids learn when they&#8217;re at school and you&#8217;ve got to be there to do that,&#8221; Mr Gniel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re really encouraged by that direction, but &#8230; we want to see higher attendance rates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A middle aged white man with short brown hair sitting in an office in a dark suit\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/6918be0fb69fba8a62888877ea918292\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Stephen Gniel says ACARA is &#8220;really encouraged&#8221; by an increase in attendance rates.
