The separation of individual consciousnesses is an illusion. When we die, our consciousness simply returns to the universal field, as a wave sinks into the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Her model, unlike many modern materialist ones, accommodates\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mindmatters.ai\/2021\/05\/do-people-suddenly-gain-clarity-about-life-just-before-dying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terminal lucidity<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mindmatters.ai\/2021\/03\/the-md-who-studies-near-death-experiences-is-not-religious\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">near-death experiences:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018If individual awareness is not generated only by the brain, but is an expression of a deeper field, as my model suggests, then moments when the brain is impaired could allow atypical access to that underlying field,\u2019 says Professor Str\u00f8mme.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mindmatters.ai\/2020\/05\/why-is-science-growing-comfortable-with-panpsychism-everything-is-conscious\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panpsychism<\/a>, is perhaps best understood as part of a gradual recognition that the sort of materialism espoused by, say,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/10538.Carl_Sagan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Sagan<\/a>\u00a0(1934\u20131996) or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawking.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Hawking<\/a>\u00a0(1942\u20132018) is coming under fire for evidence-based reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Plato\u2019s Universe<\/p>\n<p>Endless debunking, for example, is not going to provide a better means of understanding those near-death experiences whose details\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mindmatters.ai\/2022\/02\/agnostic-psychiatrist-says-near-death-experiences-are-real\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be confirmed.<\/a>\u00a0And quantum mechanics is making clear, even to physicists whom we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mindmatters.ai\/2025\/11\/physicists-math-shows-that-the-universe-cant-be-a-simulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">might not have expected<\/a>\u00a0to understand it, that we live in a universe closer to the vision of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/plato\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plato<\/a>\u00a0(c. 427 \u2013 348 BC) than of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/historic_figures\/huxley_thomas_henry.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"
