Consciousness does not emerge from human brains, according to Professor Maria Str\u00f8mme, a professor of nanotechnology at Uppsala University.<\/p>\n

Instead, she claims that it exists as a fundamental field \u2014 a \u2018building block\u2019 of the universe.<\/p>\n

If this is correct, \u2018mysterious\u2019 phenomena such as telepathy, near\u2013death experiences, and even life after death could finally be explained by science.<\/p>\n

According to Professor Str\u00f8mme\u2019s theory, consciousness does not end when we die.<\/p>\n

Instead, when a person passes away, their consciousness simply returns to the background field. <\/p>\n

Like a Wave Sinking into the Ocean<\/p>\n

According to her model, consciousness underlies the universe. The separation of individual consciousnesses is an illusion. When we die, our consciousness simply returns to the universal field, as a wave sinks into the ocean.<\/p>\n

Her model, unlike many modern materialist ones, accommodates\u00a0terminal lucidity<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0near-death experiences:<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2018If individual awareness is not generated only by the brain, but is an expression of a deeper field, as my model suggests, then moments when the brain is impaired could allow atypical access to that underlying field,\u2019 says Professor Str\u00f8mme.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you die<\/a>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Maria Str\u00f8mme<\/a>\u2019s approach, like\u00a0panpsychism<\/a>, is perhaps best understood as part of a gradual recognition that the sort of materialism espoused by, say,\u00a0Carl Sagan<\/a>\u00a0(1934\u20131996) or\u00a0Stephen Hawking<\/a>\u00a0(1942\u20132018) is coming under fire for evidence-based reasons.<\/p>\n

Plato\u2019s Universe<\/p>\n

Endless debunking, for example, is not going to provide a better means of understanding those near-death experiences whose details\u00a0can be confirmed.<\/a>\u00a0And quantum mechanics is making clear, even to physicists whom we\u00a0might not have expected<\/a>\u00a0to understand it, that we live in a universe closer to the vision of\u00a0Plato<\/a>\u00a0(c. 427 \u2013 348 BC) than of\u00a0Thomas Henry Huxley<\/a>\u00a0(1825\u20131895).<\/p>\n

Everything else is still up for grabs.<\/p>\n
