But this expansive, comprehensive four-part <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix_1\" data-tag=\"netflix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> series has piqued interest ever since it was announced by its top producer \u2014 Combs\u2019 rap-world rival, Curtis \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/50-cent\/\" id=\"auto-tag_50-cent_1\" data-tag=\"50-cent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50 Cent<\/a>\u201d Jackson \u2014 and it may be arriving at the right moment to provide a clear-eyed look at the whys and hows of the music industry icon\u2019s meteoric three-decade rise and inevitable downfall. The series also reveals new information that clarifies and expands upon previous elements of the rapper\u2019s story not linked to his current imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSean Combs: The Reckoning landed on Netflix this week, about two months after the rap power player was sentenced to 50 months in prison following a confounding federal trial over the summer.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/music\/music-news\/50-cent-interview-power-diddy-documetary-super-bowl-1235961859\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Jackson made a sport of roundly mocking Combs<\/a> on social media on a near-daily basis as the eight-week trial unfolded, amid allegations that he coerced two women into allegedly nonconsensual, days-long, drug-fueled sexual trysts, which prosecutors argued were run through his many companies and businesses. In 2024, the government alleged in a five-count indictment that Combs used his business empire as a means of controlling his romantic partners into participating in his sexual fantasia \u2014 a theory the jury ultimately rejected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile recently released documentaries on Combs fixated primarily on this narrative and the other crimes he has been accused of perpetrating against collaborators, loyal staff and others pulled into his orbit, Jackson and director Alex Stapleton go much further back in Combs\u2019 life. After all, this winding Diddy-vision trip through 30 years of hip-hop history reveals plenty of new information about the enigmatic Sean Combs \u2014 also known as Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Diddy and Love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCombs has consistently denied all allegations against him, and this week his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/sean-diddy-combs-slams-50-cent-netflix-documentary-illegal-1236438361\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/sean-diddy-combs-slams-50-cent-netflix-documentary-illegal-1236438361\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> attorneys sent a cease and desist letter to Netflix<\/a>, attempting to have the series removed from the platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tNew, Controversial Footage Shows How Combs Ran His Legal Team\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJackson and Stapleton were mum to THR on how the Diddy footage in the docuseries was obtained, but the filmmakers acquired new video that Combs shot of himself while sequestered primarily in a Manhattan hotel room as his arrest loomed. At times nervous, angry, and always magnetic, Combs appears close to cracking. These intermittent moments sharply contrast with the cool, all-powerful mogul who emerged from Mount Vernon and commanded a vast swath of the music industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt is here that the control he exerted over his large legal team \u2014 before and after his arrest and throughout his federal trial \u2014 is on display. We\u2019re losing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Combs-shot footage is now a legal battle in its own right, with his attorneys this week sending a takedown notice to Netflix and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/sean-diddy-combs-slams-50-cent-netflix-documentary-illegal-1236438361\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/sean-diddy-combs-slams-50-cent-netflix-documentary-illegal-1236438361\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calling<\/a> the series \u201ca shameful hit piece,\u201d an \u201cunfair,\u201d \u201cillegal,\u201d and \u201cunnecessary and deeply personal affront.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tThe Biggie Bombshell\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEpisode two delves into the story surrounding the Notorious B.I.G. and West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur, both murdered in 1997 after what the series argues was a manufactured rivalry that spiraled into gangland territory. The Crips aligned with Bad Boy Records, while the Bloods sided with Death Row Records and its notorious owner, Suge Knight. According to the docuseries, Combs was deeply involved in inflaming the gang animosity as it entered the cultural mainstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe series features drug boss Duane \u201cKeffe D\u201d Davis recounting how he and his nephew allgedly murdered Shakur, claiming Combs had agreed to pay him for allegedly killing both Shakur and Knight \u2014 but never followed through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the aftermath, Combs allegedly encouraged rising rap star Notorious B.I.G. to promote his album in Los Angeles, despite knowing how dangerous it was \u2014 even apparently ordering him to skip a planned London trip to remain on the West Coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter Biggie was gunned down in L.A. in 1997, Combs staged a massive New York funeral for the Brooklyn-bred rapper. Yet the series claims Combs charged the costs to the artist\u2019s estate, even as he publicly appeared as the grieving best friend and soon catapulted into pop superstardom with his Police-sampling tribute \u201cMissing You,\u201d featuring Biggie\u2019s widow, Faith Evans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI think Sean had envy for his own artists; he was jealous of their talent,\u201d former partner Kirk Burrowes says in the series.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tThe Trial Jury Did Not Believe Capricorn Clark\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring Combs\u2019 federal trial, former staffer Capricorn Clark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/capricorn-clark-sean-diddy-combs-ex-assistant-kidnapping-1236231278\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/capricorn-clark-sean-diddy-combs-ex-assistant-kidnapping-1236231278\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">delivered sobbing testimony<\/a> that grabbed headlines for its emotional and at times performative quality. She testified that Combs kidnapped her after learning that his then on-again, off-again girlfriend Cassie Ventura had begun seeing rapper Kid Cudi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTwo jurors explain in the documentary that Clark\u2019s testimony was difficult for the panel to believe \u2014 including her claim that, in 2011, she was forced at gunpoint to drive to Cudi\u2019s Hollywood Hills home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOne juror said they were \u201cconfused\u201d by the situation, noting that despite the violence, Clark continued to travel and dine with, and remain socially connected to Combs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s hard to reconcile,\u201d she said. Jurors also recalled moments when Combs nodded at them during testimony, as if reacting to what was being said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tJurors Did Not Buy the \u201cFreak-Off\u201d Narrative\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the fourth episode, the jurors acknowledge that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/sean-diddy-combs-cassie-ventura-tells-court-doesnt-hate-him-1236219578\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/sean-diddy-combs-cassie-ventura-tells-court-doesnt-hate-him-1236219578\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cassie Ventura\u2019s testimony<\/a> \u2014 spanning years of alleged coercion, drug-fueled \u201cfreak-offs\u201d and purported blackmail videos \u2014 was deeply disturbing. The 2016 InterContinental Hotel surveillance footage showing Combs assaulting Ventura was \u201cunforgivable,\u201d Juror 160 said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDespite this, jurors explained they struggled to convict on the sex-trafficking and racketeering charges because the legal elements did not, in their view, perfectly align with what they heard in court. \u201cDomestic violence wasn\u2019t one of the charges,\u201d another juror said. Cassie\u2019s ordeal was portrayed as horrifying in principle but difficult to prosecute under the specific statutes presented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJuror 75, who said he had no prior knowledge of Combs\u2019 career, described the relationship as \u201cvery, very complicated,\u201d saying Ventura \u201cwanted to be with him,\u201d which complicated the jury\u2019s ability to view the relationship as wholly nonconsensual.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<strong>Aubrey O\u2019Day on Her Alleged Rape<\/strong>\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the docuseries, former Danity Kane singer Aubrey O\u2019Day tearfully revisits a disturbing episode alleged to have occurred in 2005, recalled through an affidavit read aloud on camera. According to the affidavit, a witness claims to have seen O\u2019Day unconscious and partially unclothed on a leather couch while allegedly being sexually assaulted by Combs and another man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpeaking to the filmmakers, O\u2019Day says she has no memory of the incident. She adds that she \u201cdoesn\u2019t want to know\u201d whether it actually happened and firmly denies being heavily intoxicated at the time, stating she \u201cdidn\u2019t drink like that at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tO\u2019Day also recalls being pushed out of hit girl group Danity Kane after refusing what she describes as Combs\u2019 sexual advances, including explicit emails.
