For six weeks this fall, a government shutdown left service members across the country unsure if their next paycheck would arrive. For a Fort Worth resident \u2014\u00a0let\u2019s\u00a0call him Sam \u2014 that uncertainty was deeply personal. Though he had savings to get by, he watched colleagues scramble to make ends meet, picking up odd jobs\u00a0to keep income flowing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of my friends were in dire straits,\u201d Sam said. \u201cSome had to pick up Uber Eats or restaurant jobs just to have some income. I was lucky, but it was rough seeing so many\u00a0struggle.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now back at work, Sam braces for the possibility of another shutdown in January.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0keeping his options open, knowing that even returning to his job\u00a0doesn\u2019t guarantee stability. \u201cThe whole financial stability thing?\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0fragile,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Initiatives like #GivingTuesday aim to ease the burden for those struggling to make ends meet \u2014 including service members facing similar\u00a0challenges.\u00a0Retired Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Robert R. Ruark, president and CEO of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS), has spent the past seven years helping military personnel navigate financial and personal crises. For this year\u2019s campaign, NMCRS is partnering with the Air Force Aid Society, Army Emergency Relief, and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance under the banner\u00a0#MakeGivingYourSuperpower. Their goal is to raise critical funds to support service members and their families.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though service members are back to work, many are still struggling financially,\u201d Ruark said. \u201cWe see young families living on tight budgets who faced weeks without a paycheck. They might have had to take loans or skip bills just to get by.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The campaign encourages Americans to \u201cstep up, suit up, and make giving their superpower\u201d for the men and women who serve. Contributions can be made at\u00a0missionGIVE.us<\/a>, where donors can direct funds to any of the four participating military aid societies. Lockheed Martin is once again matching donations up to $1 million, doubling the impact of every gift.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The organizations provide far more than emergency financial relief. NMCRS operates 37 thrift shops worldwide, offers scholarships and interest-free loans, and supports military spouses pursuing higher education or employment despite frequent relocations. Ruark notes that these programs are particularly critical given the transient nature of military life and the financial strains that come with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur support extends across all branches, active and retired,\u201d Ruark said. \u201cService members face unique challenges \u2014 frequent transfers, deployments, and rising living costs. Our goal is to be there for them when emergencies hit, from disasters to unexpected financial crises.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Sam, who moved to Fort Worth seeking stability, the shutdown was a stark reminder of the precariousness of military-adjacent work. Though he enjoys his role, he has had to\u00a0weigh\u00a0relocation and career changes against his desire for\u00a0said\u00a0stability.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes you rethink everything,\u201d he said. \u201cYou start asking yourself, \u2018Do I stay here, hoping things stabilize, or do I uproot and chase stability elsewhere?\u2019\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a tough call.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The #GivingTuesday campaign\u00a0seeks\u00a0to relieve that pressure for service members and their families.\u00a0In 2024 alone, NMCRS expects to provide\u00a0roughly $50 million\u00a0in financial aid to\u00a0nearly 198,000\u00a0service members and their families.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For those like Sam, that support is more than practical \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a lifeline. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about getting by,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0about knowing\u00a0someone\u2019s\u00a0got your back when things go sideways.
