Day of Remembrance ceremony<\/a> at California State University, San Bernardino. While remembering those who are gone but never forgotten, loved ones also reflected on how their lives were changed that day.<\/p>\n\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s been crazy to think that 10 years has even passed,\u201d said Jolyne Verdehy.<\/p>\n
Jolyne is the daughter of Benneta Betbadal, who became a county health inspector in 2006. A mother of three, Betbadal was one of 14 people killed in the shooting.<\/p>\n
\u201cI miss just, like, her caring and wanting to help people, wanting to give back to the community and love her job,\u201d said Ethan Verdehy, Betbadal\u2019s son.<\/p>\n
Through the family\u2019s pain, Betbadal\u2019s children said that over the years, they\u2019ve managed to turn their grief into something positive.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m reminded of how I\u2019m making my mom proud at the end of the day,\u201d Jolyne said. “It\u2019s not a time of sadness anymore, it\u2019s a time to reflect back on those good memories and think like how far we actually come as her children.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colin Verdehy, Betbadal\u2019s other son, echoed those sentiments.<\/p>\n
\u201cKnowing that it\u2019s 10 years impacts me more than the rest of the anniversaries because of how much growth has come from all of us and my family,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
