GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – UW-Green Bay announcing a partnership with the Green Bay Blizzard for an alter-ego game this spring. The IFL team will take the field as the Frozen Phoenix on April 18th, the first \u201cunofficial football game\u201d for UWGB.<\/p>\n
Green Bay is still a basketball school though.<\/p>\n
Both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s team set to begin Horizon League this play. The men riding a three game winning streak into their match-up with defending champ Robert Morris on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Two of those wins coming over UMass and Iona down in the Virgin Islands. Head coach Doug Gottlieb allowing his team to take in the sites in paradise after the last win over Iona, but many of the players opting to spend their time together.<\/p>\n
A sign of how things are changing in year two under Gottlieb\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo have a group that\u2019s ten new guys. You have some guys that didn\u2019t play very much, or at all, and after those two games when you have the night off and sort of the next morning off before we pull out, to not have any issues and have all of them hanging together I think that speaks to the culture that the returners really bring. Yeah, there\u2019s a difference in energy, but there\u2019s a difference in energy because the guys that have been rewarded with playing time and opportunities are the ones that have bought into the role that we think best fits and the style of basketball we want to play,\u201d said Doug Gottlieb.<\/p>\n
The women are set to begin their title defense on the road as they visit Northern Kentucky on Thursday.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a different cast of characters for Kayla Karius\u2019 squad this season, with seven players transferring after losing a large class to graduation.<\/p>\n
The group bonding over a 5-3 start in non-conference play.<\/p>\n
KAYLA KARIUS: \u201cI\u2019m excited about where this team is headed. I think we\u2019ve seen really great flashes, sometimes even a full game, of really locked in, but then there are moments where you can see we\u2019re not on the same page quite yet. So we\u2019re still growing,\u201d said Kayla Karius.<\/p>\n
