Satellite data showed the plane turned from its flight path and headed south to the far-southern Indian Ocean, where it is <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/59b5b7009c4545fd98258afbd8c93194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">believed to have crashed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The transport ministry said in a statement that U.S.-based marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity will search intermittently from Dec. 30 for a total of 55 days, in targeted areas believed to have the highest likelihood of finding the missing aircraft. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest development underscores the government of Malaysia\u2019s commitment in providing closure to the families affected by this tragedy,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said, \u201cWe &#8230; appreciate the efforts made by the Malaysian side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia\u2019s government <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/malaysia-mh370-search-plane-b15ee5207d387b21ac7bec1fa54e0c85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave the green light in March<\/a> for a \u201cno-find, no-fee\u201d contract with Ocean Infinity to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/malaysia-mh370-search-missing-plane-044efde0df151fc96ab1340707f83014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resume the seabed search operation<\/a> at a new 15,000-square-kilometer (5,800-square-mile) site in the ocean. Ocean Infinity will be paid $70 million only if wreckage is discovered. The search was halted in April due to bad weather.<\/p>\n<p>An expensive multinational search failed to turn up any clues to its location, although <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/29cb9ffa75c14074b8f163910f3fdf7e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debris washed ashore<\/a> on the east African coast and Indian Ocean islands.
