Another \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d-inspired company is revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\">When it comes to tech startups, what\u2019s in a name? <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\">Today, a lot of them end with \u201cAI.\u201d Sometimes, you pivot and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/28\/technology\/facebook-meta-name-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-uubm0\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">change the name<\/a> to reflect your company\u2019s new focus. And sometimes you just want to evoke a mythic power and flex your nerdy bona fides. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\">There\u2019s one source of inspiration that tech startups have turned to more than others:\u00a0the works of JRR Tolkien. Especially when venture capitalist Peter Thiel is involved. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\">This week the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8c903f2e-42a6-496b-b098-ca733f340ffc\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-uubm0\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Financial Times reported<\/a> that Thiel, along with Palmer Luckey, the cofounder of weapons and surveillance systems manufacturer Anduril, returned to Middle Earth for the name of the new national bank they\u2019re starting to take the place of Silicon Valley Bank, which served a large part of the tech startup and venture capital world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/14\/business\/silicon-valley-bank-gregory-becker.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-uubm0\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">before collapsing<\/a> in 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\"><b>\u201cErebor Bank\u201d<\/b> takes its name from Erebor, otherwise known as the \u201cLonely Mountain,\u201d which featured prominently in Tolkien\u2019s 1937 novel \u201cThe Hobbit.\u201d  Erebor is home to Smaug the dragon, who, like President Trump, <a href=\"https:\/\/sherwood.news\/power\/shop-this-look-buy-cheap-faux-gold-dupes-of-oval-office-decor\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-uubm0\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">surrounds himself with gold<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\">Let\u2019s see if you can pick the real company names inspired by Tolkien\u2019s works from the fake ones we made up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\">(If you need some help, we\u2019ve got two spoilers below the quiz) <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\"><a class=\"inline-stock css-1iix00n\" href=\"https:\/\/robinhood.com\/us\/en\/stocks\/PLTR\/?source=sherwood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palantir<\/a>,  cofounded by Thiel, is named for the cursed seeing stones that allowed Sauron to pry into the minds of the Hobbits in \u201cLord of the Rings.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-fiuwhu\">Luckey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sherwood.news\/business\/anduril-building-usd1-billion-factory-to-churn-out-autonomous-weapons-and\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-uubm0\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><b>Anduril<\/b><\/a> is named for the mystical sword reforged from the legendary Shards of Narsil, a name chosen by Aragorn, which translates to \u201cFlame of the West.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When it comes to tech startups, what\u2019s in a name?
