(AP Photo\/Eric Gay)<\/p>\n<p>Houston-area residents are among those reported dead and missing in Central Texas, where flooding on Friday killed at least 43 people, according to local and state officials.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I am heartbroken by the devastating flooding in Kerr County, which has claimed more than 20 lives according to the latest report, including young victims from Houston and left others still missing,\u201d Houston Mayor John Whitmire said in a statement Saturday afternoon. \u201cThe City of Houston is doing all we can to support the families and response efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The death toll included 28 adults and 15 children, and an untold number more were missing, officials in Kerr County said Saturday. <\/p>\n<p>At least 20 children from Camp Mystic \u2014 a Christian summer camp in the Texas Hill Country \u2014 were unaccounted for in the Guadalupe River floods that inundated the area on Independence Day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/texas\/2025\/07\/04\/525648\/guadalupe-river-flooding-leads-to-fatalities-in-texas-hill-country\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Search continues for missing girls and other survivors of Guadalupe River floods that killed at least 27<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a news release and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LinaHidalgoTX\/status\/1941278096310571171\" rel=\"nofollow\">social media post<\/a> early Friday night, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said it had been confirmed that at least five of those who died in the floods were from the Houston area. A subsequent statement shortly before 11 p.m. Friday, described as a \u201ccorrection,\u201d omitted information about local fatalities.  A spokesperson for Hidalgo said early Saturday, \u201cwe still do not have confirmation on how many of the deceased were Harris County residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe violent surge of flood waters is something we are all too familiar with,\u201d Hidalgo said in her initial statement Friday. \u201cI pray that emergency personnel are able to promptly find the young girls missing from Camp Mystic. Our Office of Emergency Management stands ready to support in any way needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said the death toll from the Guadalupe River flooding had risen to 27. Search rescue efforts continued.<\/p>\n<p>The names of those who died in the flooding were not immediately released by state officials. About 850 people had been rescued in the flood waters as of Saturday. Emergency response officials urged people to avoid the area.<\/p>\n<p>The missing girls from the summer camp included 9-year-old Greta Toranzo, a Houston ISD student, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SinclairElementaryPTO\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sinclair Elementary PTO<\/a>. Camp Mystic is an all-girls camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River, in the heart of an area known as Flash Flood Alley.<\/p>\n<p>Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones said in a Saturday afternoon statement that \u201cat least one child\u201d from her Houston-area precinct \u201chas still not been located.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several other people from the Houston area were among those missing in Kerr County, according to multiple news reports<a href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/post\/central-texas-experiences-deadly-flash-flooding-overnight-killing-several-submerging-streets-guadalupe-river\/16953999\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">.<\/p>\n<p>The state of Texas on Friday deployed hundreds of search and rescue personnel and more than a dozen helicopters into the region.<\/p>\n<p>The Houston Fire Department on Friday assisted first responders in the area with rescue efforts. Three HFD firefighters were deployed as part of the Texas A&amp;M Task Force One.
