{"id":423112,"date":"2025-12-04T02:24:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T02:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/423112\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T02:24:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T02:24:15","slug":"fort-worth-monk-undergoes-leg-amputation-after-recent-highway-collision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/423112\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Worth monk undergoes leg amputation after recent highway collision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Fort Worth Buddhist monk injured during a walk to the nation\u2019s capital underwent surgery to amputate his leg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bhante Dam Phommasan was one of several monks participating in a 2,300-mile walk to Washington, D.C., as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/10\/27\/fort-worth-buddhist-monks-take-first-steps-in-2300-mile-journey-for-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walk for Peace<\/a> initiative that began in late October at the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in east Fort Worth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He entered surgery at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 3, according to an announcement on the Walk for Peace official Facebook page. Wednesday afternoon the group posted that Phommasan\u2019s surgery was \u201csuccessfully completed\u201d and that he was \u201cresting comfortably under medical care and beginning the healing process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phommasan was injured late Nov. 19 just outside of Houston after a pickup truck driver struck one of the group\u2019s escort vehicles, pushing the car into the monks walking along the shoulder of U.S. Route 90, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/post\/us-90-eastbound-shut-down-grand-parkway-auto-pedestrian-crash-officials-say\/18177524\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC13<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1370120608098514\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> posted to the page, Tue Nhan Bhikkhu, also known as Rev. Nguyen and the vice president of the temple, and Phommasan shared a conversation before his surgery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Phommasan discussed his decision to undergo the surgery to remove his leg rather than enduring multiple surgeries needed for his injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, things happen. I\u2019m very happy that you are very strong and decisive and you want to move on. You don\u2019t want to spend time like that,\u201d Nguyen said, adding his apologies to\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Phommasan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t feel bad for me,\u201d Phommasan responded. \u201cIt is my decision \u2026 I accept everything that happened.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 110-day expedition is meant to be \u201ca journey to bring blessings to countless lives in a world filled with uncertainty and restlessness,\u201d Tue Nhan Bhikkhu said during an <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/10\/24\/fort-worth-buddhist-monks-to-embark-on-2300-mile-nationwide-walk-for-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oct. 19 press conference<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The monks are set to traverse 10 states along their route, stopping at state capitols, historic landmarks and in local communities to share their message and invite people to join them in moments of reflection and prayer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since their departure from Fort Worth, drivers and Texas residents have shared sightings or encounters with the monks on social video. The official Walk for Peace USA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@walkforpeaceusa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok account<\/a> has amassed nearly 90,000 followers.<\/p>\n<p>The group has a live Google map, where people can track the monks\u2019 journey along the way.
