{"id":423273,"date":"2025-12-04T03:58:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T03:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/423273\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T03:58:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T03:58:12","slug":"killings-of-black-panthers-dedicated-with-plaque-in-chicago-56-years-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/423273\/","title":{"rendered":"Killings of Black Panthers dedicated with plaque in Chicago 56 years later"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the morning of Dec. 4, 1969, Nwhai Nefahito was in the Near West Side house where local and federal police stormed in and assassinated Black Panther leaders Mark Clark and Fred Hampton.<\/p>\n<p>Nefahito was shot twice, once in the hand and once in the leg, as a police officer fired an automatic rifle through the wall of 2337 W. Monroe St. into the bedroom where she had been sleeping. <\/p>\n<p>She saw then 22-year-old Clark \u2014 who she described as a quiet, humble person who would watch over the room \u2014 be fatally shot.<\/p>\n<p>Until last month, she hadn\u2019t been back to the home where she saw two of her friends die.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday night, though, she joined others who had survived the raid, as well as other former Black Panthers, as they dedicated a plaque to the site 56 years after the assassination.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the latest of 12 plaques to be placed around Chicago, as well as another in Peoria, as part of the Black Panther Heritage Trail that denotes <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/ilbpp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">historic sites<\/a> in Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to remember the people who stood up and gave their lives,\u201d Nefahito said. \u201cWe see where we\u2019re at now. \u2026 We can\u2019t be complacent, we can\u2019t take the liberties and rights we have for granted. We have to fight, work and be kind to each other. Monroe St, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere\/Sun-Times<\/p>\n<p>The commemorations were <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/black-history\/2024\/10\/27\/illinois-black-panthers-heritage-trail-civil-rights-black-history-fred-hampton-mark-clark\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">first revealed last October<\/a> after a fight over how the organization\u2019s legacy <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/black-history\/2023\/11\/24\/23933912\/black-panther-party-illinois-national-register-historic-places-fred-hampton-jr\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">would be preserved<\/a>, one commemorating the since-demolished Illinois Black Panther Party headquarters was installed on the Near West Side in July during a similar ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Nefahito took her time addressing the crowd to commemorate other Panthers who had since died, and later recounted memories of the assassination and Hampton, who she said was always educating and watching out for others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The officer shooting] said \u2018I\u2019ll get \u2018em out with this,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cThey were shooting through the wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the hospital, Nefahito was chained to her bed by officers despite orders from her doctor to walk as part of her physical therapy.
