(WCAX) &#8211; A planned closure of the inpatient pediatric unit at Rutland Regional Medical Center is causing concerns for some families in the Rutland area, as well as attention from state health care regulators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/2025\/10\/30\/rutland-regional-medical-center-announces-closure-pediatric-inpatient-beds\/ \" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/2025\/10\/30\/rutland-regional-medical-center-announces-closure-pediatric-inpatient-beds\/ \">Rutland Regional Medical Center announced in October that it would be closing its five inpatient pediatric beds in its women\u2019s and children\u2019s unit.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">As of now, the beds are planned to close by December 21, but even a delay to that would mean the world to Cayleen Chapin. \u201cMy child has literally spent 85% of his first year and a half of life in the women\u2019s and children\u2019s unit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Pittsford mother\u2019s youngest son, Easton, has a rare breathing disorder and has been treated already three times this winter. Other times, his case is so severe that he needs attention at the UVM Medical Center. She said she was shocked to hear RRMC\u2019s plans <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cUnfortunately, that\u2019s an hour and 45 minutes from here. My husband&#8230; I\u2019m at home with my ill son, so my husband works all week. I\u2019ve got two other children, and that\u2019s a nightmare. How am I supposed to be in two places at once?\u201d Chapin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">RRMC officials say the unit\u2019s beds are often unoccupied and they can\u2019t afford to maintain it. The plan is to shift care to the hospital\u2019s emergency department, where most young patients are already seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe see 4,000 pediatric patients every year. We care for the sickest of those children in our ED,\u201d said the hospital\u2019s Alison Davis. \u201cWe\u2019re listening very carefully to our pediatric partners on how we can do that in the best way possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The closure still needs to be approved by the Green Mountain Care Board, <a href=\"https:\/\/gmcboard.vermont.gov\/sites\/gmcb\/files\/documents\/Board%20Mtg%20Agenda-%2012.5.2025%281%29.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/gmcboard.vermont.gov\/sites\/gmcb\/files\/documents\/Board%20Mtg%20Agenda-%2012.5.2025%281%29.pdf\">which will hold a virtual meeting on Friday at 1 p.m. to hear concerns.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIf they take Rutland pediatrics away, there\u2019s nobody else south of UVM. That\u2019s a huge deal,\u201d Chapin said. \u201cA lot of us community members are going to lose the trust in the hospital and their ability to take care of the most vulnerable community members.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Chapin says she also doesn\u2019t want to see the extra strain that will be placed on the hospital\u2019s emergency department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2025 WCAX.
