First, the bad news: Experts say eating a diet that\u2019s 100% sardines isn\u2019t a great idea. Despite the success stories you\u2019ve probably seen on your feed, it won\u2019t help you lose weight in the long term. Plus, a sardine-only diet leaves your body lacking in important nutrients. The good news is that sardines do have some health benefits and can easily be incorporated into a healthy diet.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Before you run out to stock up on sardines, read what the experts have to say about these briny little fish. <\/p>\n<p>What is the sardine diet? <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The sardine diet is basically what it sounds like: A diet consisting almost entirely of sardines. The diet was popularized in 2023 by Dr. Annette Bosworth (a.k.a. Dr. Boz) as a three-day challenge, though other creators have tried sticking to the diet for longer periods of time. Boz has recommended sticking to water and black coffee while you\u2019re on the diet, and has suggested adding carb-free hot sauce or seasonings to sardines if you\u2019re not a fan of the taste. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The sardine diet has become popular on TikTok and Instagram, and there have been a few high-profile stories about people who claim to have lost significant amounts of weight by following the sardine diet. One woman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/sardine-diet-weight-loss-rcna221508\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/sardine-diet-weight-loss-rcna221508\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"interviewed by Today.com\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">interviewed by Today.com<\/a> says she lost 25 pounds by eating nothing but canned sardines and oil for 120 days. Another person who wrote about his experience following the sardine diet for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/3-day-sardine-fast-keto-diet-impressive-results-1817004\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/3-day-sardine-fast-keto-diet-impressive-results-1817004\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Newsweek\" data-node-id=\"9.3.0\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsweek<\/a> says he lost four pounds in three days. <br data-node-id=\"9.5\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Does the sardine diet work for weight loss? <br data-node-id=\"10.1\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"body-text css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Despite anecdotes like the above, experts do not recommend trying the sardine diet if you want to lose weight. \u201cEating only sardines might help you lose weight because you\u2019ll likely get tired of the monotony and end up eating fewer calories, but that\u2019s just undereating, not the healthy weight loss we recommend,\u201d explains Perez. \u201cAs a bariatric surgeon, I see this pattern often in clinic, where extreme, single-food diets result in short-lived weight loss, only to lead to deficiencies or backfiring when patients give up and binge-eat their favorite foods all of a sudden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Beyond being ineffective, eating only one item or category of food isn\u2019t great for your body, according to Moreno. \u201cThis can lead to dangerous nutrient deficiencies and electrolyte alterations,\u201d she explains. <br data-node-id=\"12.1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sardine nutrition facts <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/download.ssrn.com\/2025\/7\/1\/5333757.pdf?\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/download.ssrn.com\/2025\/7\/1\/5333757.pdf?\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"3.75 oz serving of sardines\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">3.75 oz serving of sardines<\/a> canned in water provides approximately:  <\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"15.0\">90 calories<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"15.1\">22.6 grams of protein<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"15.2\">351 milligrams of calcium<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"15.3\">2 grams of fat<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"15.4\">343% of the daily value (DV) for vitamin B12<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"15.5\">22% DV vitamin D<br data-node-id=\"15.5.1\"\/><\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"15.6\">15% DV iron <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If they\u2019re canned in oil, they contain closer to 190 calories and 10.5 grams of fat. Sardines also contain zinc and magnesium, which are two other nutrients your body needs to function optimally. They also contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/a40979119\/fish-oil-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/a40979119\/fish-oil-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"omega-3 fatty acids\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/a>, which support heart, brain, and eye health and can reduce inflammation.  <\/p>\n<p>Are sardines good for you? <\/p>\n<p id=\"are-there-benefits-to-eating-sardines---risks-of-the-sardine-diet\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"body-text css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Yes! This is linked to favorable benefits for immunity, cognition and a host of anti-inflammatory benefits. As Perez points out, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/signs-you-need-fiber\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/signs-you-need-fiber\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"your gut microbiome needs fiber\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">your gut microbiome needs fiber<\/a> to support metabolism and hunger regulation. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cYou also risk too much sodium and an imbalance of vitamins and minerals,\u201d he says. \u201cI often see the consequences of overly restrictive diets in my practice: People lose weight quickly, but their metabolism, digestion, and hunger cues end up worse than before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cIndividuals with hypertension, kidney disease, heart failure, gout, or sodium-sensitive conditions should avoid a sardine-only diet,\u201d says Dr. Rasoul Montazeri, a triple board-certified physician and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/healthon.com\/pages\/about-us?\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/healthon.com\/pages\/about-us?\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Healthon\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Healthon<\/a>. \u201cThe sodium and purine load can worsen blood pressure, strain kidney function, and trigger joint inflammation. Pregnant individuals or people with metabolic disorders also require a more balanced nutrient profile to remain healthy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Moreno also points out that some sardines contain bones, so they can be hazardous for anyone who has difficulty swallowing. And of course, people with fish allergies shouldn\u2019t try the sardine diet.  <\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: Does the sardine diet help you lose weight? <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While it\u2019s technically possible to lose weight eating nothing but sardines, experts don\u2019t recommend the sardine diet to lose weight.
