Nonetheless, Queen Bey pulled out all the stops for her July 4 show at Maryland\u2019s Northwest Stadium, just outside of Washington, D.C., the U.S. capital.<\/p>\n \n\tIn its Grammy-winning<\/a> exploration and illumination of the oft-obfuscated Black roots of American country music (and early rock \u2018n\u2019 roll), Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s Cowboy Carter<\/a> LP found the music icon squaring her personal catharsis (the album was largely made in response to her negative experience at the 2016 CMA Awards<\/a>) with a look at how the recording industry mirrors the exploitation and discardment of Black minds and lives in America at large.<\/p>\n \n\tOn Independence Day, Beyonc\u00e9 entered the stage with her rousing Cowboy Carter opener, \u201cAmeriican Requiem\u201d; introduced by backup dancers doused in blue, the 35-time Grammy-winner\u2019s vocals reverberated across the stadium. The song, something of a funeral march for an antiquated version of America, set a resiliently optimistic tone for the rest of the night. Between performing the entire Cowboy Carter LP, weaving in classic hits from across her nearly 30-year-strong catalog and incorporating recent hits from Black Southern stars like GloRilla<\/a> (\u201cTGIF\u201d) and BigXthaPlug<\/a> (\u201cThe Biggest\u201d), Beyonc\u00e9 crafted a sacred space for Black Americans (and those belonging to the country\u2019s most mistreated groups) to host their own emotionally complex acknowledgement of the nation\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n \n\tHere are the seven best moments of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s Cowboy Carter Tour on July 4 in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n \t\u201cMy House\u201d 25 Minutes Away From the White House<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cMy House,\u201d the house-rap track Beyonc\u00e9 dropped to commemorate Renaissance: A Film by Beyonc\u00e9<\/a> hitting theaters, was always destined to be an explosive live performance. From its raucous horns to its frenetic chants, the track was an instant fan favorite for a reason. On July 4, however, there was a certain gravity felt across the stadium when Beyonc\u00e9 chanted, \u201cGet the f\u2014 up out my house!\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAfter all, Northwest Stadium is just a 25-minute drive from the White House, where the sitting president signed a devastating new bill<\/a> mere hours earlier. In a country that\u2019s getting increasingly explicit about who it feels belongs, \u201cMy House\u201d offered the crowd a moment to flip the narrative and find an outlet for their rage.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n \tBeyonc\u00e9 Opens Show with New American Flag Coat<\/p>\n \n\tFashion has long been a key component of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s stage show \u2014 especially after the Renaissance World Tour\u2019s silver theme<\/a> took over the globe in 2023 \u2014 and the Cowboy Carter Tour is no different. Throughout her latest stadium trek, she has debuted a plethora of Western-themed outfits, some of which also nod to the aesthetic of Renaissance, the first LP in her still-unfurling album trilogy<\/a>.<\/p>\n \n\tTo open her July 4 show in Washington, D.C., Beyonc\u00e9 opted for an eye-popping fur coat printed with the design of the American flag over a figure-hugging gray and silver-blue leotard emblazoned with stars. If the coat was a nod to the Cowboy Carter aesthetic, then the leotard nodded to Renaissance \u2014 the vibrant Black foundation that America relentlessly attempts to stifle and erase.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n \tQueen Bey Goes Full Hendrix<\/p>\n \n\tEver since she kicked off the tour in Los Angeles (April 28), Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s otherworldly transition from a vocal interpretation of Jimi Hendrix\u2019s 1969 Woodstock rendition of \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d into her own \u201cFreedom\u201d (which soundtracked Kamala Harris\u2019 2024 presidential campaign<\/a>) has been an interesting point of discussion. While some didn\u2019t understand the choice and others felt it was in poor taste, Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s intentions couldn\u2019t have been clearer as she delivered a dirgeful version of America\u2019s anthem on its birthday. Preceded by her own \u201cAmeriican Requiem\u201d and succeeded by her cries of \u201cFreedom, freedom, where are you?\u201d, the opening act of the Cowboy Carter Tour felt especially poignant on July 4.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n \tBeyonc\u00e9 Spots Her Cousin? Sorry, Her Husband<\/p>\n \n\tAbout 15 years ago, Anthony Cosby (hyphen Knowles!) became a BeyHive legend ever since he hilariously proclaimed to be both Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s cousin and husband during her I Am.. World Tour. Cosby has popped up at Bey\u2019s tour ever since, including the July 4 Cowboy Carter show, where Beyonc\u00e9 shouted him out, saying<\/a>, \u201cC\u2019mon Anthony! I see you, cousin\u2026 husband!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n \tD\u00e9j\u00e0 Blue<\/p>\n \n\tAlready a Grammy winner<\/a> and box office-topping<\/a> voice actress in her own right, Blue Ivy Carter<\/a> needs no introduction. Her Cowboy Carter Tour solos have quickly become the show\u2019s most buzzed-about moments, and not much changed in Maryland on July 4. As Honey Balenciaga closed out her part of the rodeo-ballroom section, tens of thousands of phones rose en masse as Blue Ivy emerged from the stage lift, hitting a nasty slow motion turn into her catwalk and \u201cD\u00e9j\u00e0 Vu\u201d dance break<\/a> \u2014 all while donning a new custom costume, of course!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n \tBeyonc\u00e9 Lincoln Enters the Building<\/p>\n \n\tThe \u201cAttack of the 400 Foot Cowboy\u201d interlude is one of the better breaks in Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s three-hour Cowboy Carter set, thanks to both her globe-trotting, slapstick humor and BigXthaPlug\u2019s wavy \u201cThe Biggest.\u201d In the interlude, a 400-foot-tall version of Beyonc\u00e9 struts around the world and treats various world landmarks \u2014 from the Statue of Liberty to the Eiffel Tower \u2014 as playthings. Of course, when the Lincoln Memorial winked at her in response to her hat tip, the crowd went absolutely nuts. <\/p>\n \n\tNotably, Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s exclusive T-shirt for her D.C. stop features a picture of her posing in place of Lincoln on the memorial. Looks like we\u2019re one step closer to that Beyonc\u00e9-Oh, Mary! crossover.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n \tNew \u2018Alliigator Tears\u2019 Outfit Deepens Song\u2019s Message<\/p>\n \n\tOne of the more overlooked songs on Cowboy Carter, \u201cAlliigator Tears\u201d remains one of the album\u2019s strongest tracks over a year after its release. The song explores the toll it takes to transform yourself to fit demands you\u2019ll never meet, set by people who\u2019ll never truly see past their own insincerity and manipulation \u2014 and Beyonc\u00e9 drove that message home with her new costume.<\/p>\n \n\tDonning a sparkly, red grown with a thigh-high slit laced with blue frings and white stars, Beyonc\u00e9, once again, looked to the American flag to inform her outfit. During this section (which also included gorgeous renditions of \u201cProtector,\u201d \u201cJust for Fun\u201d and \u201cFlamenco\u201d), the costume emphasized the way \u201cAlliigator Tears\u201d illustrates the larger dynamic between Black people and the American project. When she sings, \u201cYou say chang\u0435 religion\/ Now, I spend Sundays with you\/ Somethin\u2019 \u2019bout those tears of yours\/ How does it feel to be adored,\u201d she\u2019s directly calling out the U.S. for its constantly-shifting goalposts.
