{"id":425021,"date":"2025-12-04T22:09:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T22:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/425021\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T22:09:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T22:09:14","slug":"trump-official-fights-for-his-life-as-fox-news-grills-him-on-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/425021\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Official Fights for His Life as Fox News Grills Him on Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett is fighting for his life trying to put a positive spin on the latest economic data\u2014and even Fox News isn\u2019t having it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fox host Martha McCallum <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atrupar\/status\/1996676399587811475\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:asked Hassett on Thursday;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">asked Hassett on Thursday<\/a> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/layoffs-hit-record-high-trump-150228064.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:brutal new layoff numbers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brutal new layoff numbers<\/a> from consulting firm Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas. \u201cYear-to-date job cuts show an increase of 54 percent,\u201d McCallum asked Hassett. \u201cThat seems like a troubling number. What\u2019s your take on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hassett waffled, claiming that jobs were in flux. \u201cDon\u2019t forget that there\u2019s hires and there\u2019s fires, there\u2019s separations and new jobs, and so net job creation for the year is very positive. But the flow of jobs in and out is a little bit higher, there\u2019s a little bit more turnover. A lot of times that happens because people feel that they\u2019re able to get another job if they leave this job,\u201d Hassett said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hassett seems not to realize that the report does not measure the normal ebb and flow of people choosing to leave a job, but job cuts\u2014layoffs. Layoffs this year have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.challengergray.com\/blog\/challenger-report-71321-job-cuts-on-restructurings-closings-economy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:surpassed 1 million;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">surpassed 1 million<\/a> for the first time since Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">McCallum <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atrupar\/status\/1996677764842127491\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:hit Hassett with another unpleasant truth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">hit Hassett with another unpleasant truth<\/a>: that despite Hassett and the Trump administration\u2019s attempt to spin the affordability crisis, voters still know who\u2019s to blame. Looking at a Fox News poll, McCallum noted that 76 percent of respondents see the economy as \u201conly fair\u201d or \u201cpoor.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAnd then, when we have \u2018Who is responsible for current economic conditions, President Trump or President Biden?\u2019 We have Trump at 62 percent.\u2026 What would you say to people who are answering the survey that way, Kevin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hassett defaulted to one of the Republicans\u2019 favorite recent scapegoats: the shutdown. \u201cOne of the things that we\u2019ve seen, we\u2019ve studied over the last couple of weeks, is that when there\u2019s a government shutdown \u2026 the survey data tend[s] to really tank because everyone is in a terrible mood, because Washington can\u2019t work and the government\u2019s shut down, and they\u2019re worried about how bad it\u2019s going to be,\u201d Hassett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Right.
