which is also known as<strong class=\"vtkaO \">\u00a0<\/strong>perigee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Lunar perigee happens at about 226,000 miles from Earth every 27-day orbit period, according to NASA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The agency notes that the term supermoon, though not an official astronomical term, describes, &#8220;a full Moon that comes within at least 90 percent of perigee.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Viewing a supermoon is special because they only occur three to four times a year, according to NASA.<\/p>\n<p>How does a Cold Moon gets its name?<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Moons can earn a variety of monikers and nicknames, but per the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/full-moon-december\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Farmer&#8217;s Almanac<\/a>, are derived from &#8220;centuries of Native American, colonial, and European traditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Cold Moon &#8212; as this December full moon is commonly to referred to &#8212; reflects the frigid season, Farmer&#8217;s Almanac explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;It is also known as the Long Night Moon (Mohican) because it rises during the longest nights of the year, near the\u00a0winter solstice, and remains above the horizon for an extended\u00a0period,&#8221;
