An artist who is also a trained landscape architect, Erika Huddleston has previously created series of plein-air paintings based on outdoor research residencies at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden<\/a>, the Shoal Creek<\/a> greenbelt in Austin and Jemison Park<\/a> outside Birmingham, Ala. <\/p>\n

Now for \u201cThe Painter\u2019s Garden\u201d at Artspace111 in Fort Worth, she depicts her own garden in 10 easel-size oil paintings. In each of them, a close-in perspective fills the greater part of the visual field with plants that sprawl across the canvas in abundant variety, woven together in naturally occurring patterns. <\/p>\n

Bright dabs of red turk\u2019s cap<\/a> and purple beautyberry<\/a> punctuate the space in front of broad swaths of pale grasses like switchgrass<\/a> and blue grama<\/a>, spread across the background. Huddleston shows with great \u00e9lan that, although not the most gaudily spectacular of flora, North Texas plant species have their share of elegant integrity.<\/p>\n
