Residents of Cape Coral gathered to express their opinions on the future of the old golf course at the city’s second public meeting.<\/p>\n
The 175 acres of land in question has sparked debate among community members about its potential use. Options on the table include another golf course, a community center, or minimal development.<\/p>\n
“The consensus of the council was a green space and that’s what it should be left as,” said one attendee, highlighting the desire for preservation.<\/p>\n
A unique vision was presented by another community member: “It would be so unique to have a full 9-course and then a park for everyone else,” they said.<\/p>\n
The city acquired the land last year, and Councilwoman Jennifer Nelson-Lastra assured residents that heavy development is not planned.<\/p>\n
“People have asked me about a hotel, because, I guess at one point there was a hotel there, but that’s not on the horizon either,” she said. “I mean, really, we’re really taking what the residents say to heart, and we’re really looking at what their opinions are, what they want to see there.”<\/p>\n
Some residents, like Julia Attari, emphasized the promise of green space. “They promised it as green space,” she said.<\/p>\n
Others, like Charlie Pease, expressed a desire to see the park rejuvenated. “It was a golf course for 50 plus years. And so having a golf course element on part of that property, which is a Parks and Recreation element, I think would really make sure you have a win-win,” he said.<\/p>\n
Joe Petrella, Cape Parks and Recreation Director, outlined the steps ahead. “We’ve got a lot of things that got to happen down there, including the storm water analysis and things of that nature. But yeah, we’re extremely excited to see this move forward.”<\/p>\n
A timeline for the park’s official opening is yet to be determined.
