{"id":42676,"date":"2025-07-06T06:17:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-06T06:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/42676\/"},"modified":"2025-07-06T06:17:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-06T06:17:09","slug":"another-shark-spotted-100-feet-away-from-swimmers-at-rockaway-beach-prompting-closure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/42676\/","title":{"rendered":"Another shark spotted 100 feet away from swimmers at Rockaway Beach, prompting closure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s \u201cShark Weekend\u201d in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Another shark was spotted swimming precariously close to swimmers at Rockaway Beach Saturday \u2014 just 100 feet away<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/04\/us-news\/several-sharks-spotted-very-close-to-beachgoers-in-the-rockaways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <\/a>\u2014 prompting the closure of the popular watering hole for<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/04\/us-news\/several-sharks-spotted-very-close-to-beachgoers-in-the-rockaways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the second day in a row.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>NYPD drones captured the toothsome predator around 6 p.m. in the area of Beach 113th and Beach 115th streets in Rockaway Park, Queens \u2014 with video showing the shark writhing just beneath the surface of the water, shockingly close to oblivious swimmers.<\/p>\n<p>The shark\u2019s fin seemed to sneak above the surface of the water for just a moment before it disappeared back into the Atlantic\u2019s murky depths.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.77777778;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36449341\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/115-thanks-innovative-multifaceted-public-107686704.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of a shark spotted near swimmers at Rockaway Beach.\" class=\"wp-image-36449341\"  \/>Drone footage showed two swimmers practically within spitting distance of the seasonal predator. X\/@kazdaughtry<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shark was last seen swimming back into open waters,\u201d the city\u2019s Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kazdaughtry\/status\/1941646143651447231\">tweeted. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the sky to the surf, we are constantly patrolling with drones to detect both shark activity and distressed swimmers. This is how we stay ahead of danger \u2014 and keep New Yorkers safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s sighting, the fourth in two days, shuttered the shore from Beach 92nd to Beach 124th streets.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8 Another shark sighting at Rockaway Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Around 6:00 PM, our drone team spotted a shark just 100 feet from swimmers near Beach 113. X\/@kazdaughtry<\/p>\n<p>On July 4, there were three shark sightings off the coast of Rockaway Park \u2014 at Beach 32nd Street, another at Beach 144th Street and a third at Beach 30th Street.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese sightings were very close to beachgoers,\u201d Daughtry warned in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kazdaughtry\/status\/1941203602959126803\">post to X on Friday.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Officials have not said which type of sharks were spotted. However, species like Atlantic Menhaden and smooth dogfish <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/05\/us-news\/sharks-in-long-island-waters-are-the-new-norm-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been known to favor New York waters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a statement Thursday, Gov. Kathy Hochul said New York park officials are utilizing drones and helicopters to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/04\/us-news\/long-island-on-high-alert-for-sharks-as-thousands-head-to-beach-for-fourth-of-july\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beef up shark patrols<\/a> in an effort to prevent any man-eater encounters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are continuing to strengthen our shark surveillance capabilities and safety tactics at these beaches to help protect these treasured summertime traditions,\u201d Hochul wrote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI encourage all beachgoers to stay safe, stay alert, and always follow the direction of lifeguards and park staff,\u201d the governor advised.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s \u201cShark Weekend\u201d in New York City.
