31) Los Angeles Chargers (Up 1). The Chargers experienced protection issues again in Week 13, surrendering seven pressures \u2014 including two sacks \u2014 to the Raiders across 28 dropbacks. The unit\u2019s 83.9 PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating ranked only 23rd this week. Center Bradley Bozeman played well in pass protection, logging an 82.6 PFF pass-blocking grade that ranked eighth among centers this week. [BLG Note: The only team ranked below the Chargers? Here\u2019s an idea of what the Chargers\u2019 passing game has looked like since Alt was lost for the season: \u201cThe Chargers passing offense has been completely non-functional without their two stud tackles. Weeks 6-9 (with Alt): 9th in EPA\/dropback. Weeks 10-13 (no Alt): 28th in EPA\/dropback.\u201d So, you know, not great. At RG, Mekhi Becton has not played well this season for the Chargers when healthy, and was benched by Jim Harbaugh to start the second half against the Jaguars Week 11. Grain of salt as always, but PFF has Bozeman ranked 37th out of 37 centers. Johnson is an average starter. This is the worst offensive line the Eagles will have faced this season, to date. Jalen Carter is out, but that\u2019s no excuse. If the Eagles can\u2019t get consistent pressure on Justin Herbert, they probably aren\u2019t going to win this game. It is the one major advantage they should have in this matchup.<\/p>\n
Maybe the Philadelphia Eagles aren\u2019t going to choke away their NFC East lead after all? The Birds certainly have their fair share of concerns after losing two games in a row. But the Dallas Cowboys aren\u2019t perfect, either. The Cowboys saw their three-game win streak come to an end on Thursday night by losing to the Detroit Lions. It was an important result for the Eagles since Philly\u2019s magic number to win the division is now down to three games. If the Eagles go 3-2 in their final five games, they\u2019ll clinch the NFC East even if the Cowboys go undefeated the rest of the way. Dallas winning out isn\u2019t impossible; they have the second-easiest remaining strength of schedule in the NFL.<\/p>\n
It is never good to lose your best defensive player as you are trying to end a 2-game losing streak. Like I said, nothing is easy this year. Carter has been up and down as he\u2019s dealt with the shoulder issue for much of the year. He played a ton of snaps last year and has played a lot this year. That wear and tear finally caught up to him. The key is now to try to get Carter healthy for the postseason. The Eagles still have good DTs in Jordan Davis and Moro Ojomo. Byron Young is a solid role player. Now rookie Ty Robinson will have to step up and contribute. Vic Fangio could also use Jaelan Phillips and Brandon Graham at DT in passing situations. The defense has struggled without Carter this season. Fangio needs to have a good plan and his players need to step up and play well without their most disruptive player on the field. This will be a big test for the D.<\/p>\n
If there were an obvious fix for the offense, then it would have happened by now. I don\u2019t believe in change for change\u2019s sake, so unless the Eagles felt there was somebody on staff who would be better at calling plays than Kevin Patullo, then a demotion might be more of a scapegoat than a solution. It\u2019s important to ask, what do the Eagles do well, and can they lean into it? The two quick changes that I would make would be increasing the tempo rate and better incorporating Jalen Hurts in the running game. From conversations in the locker room, the Eagles believe they\u2019re best when they\u2019re in tempo. The Eagles have an EPA\/play of 0.09 when in no-huddle (No. 15 in the league) and -0.03 (No. 22) when huddling. If the offense is built around leaning on superb talent, let them play fast and catch the defense in bad looks. With Hurts, part of what makes him special is his legs. There seems to be an effort this year to run less. Maybe they\u2019re conserving the legs for the playoffs. It\u2019s not a coincidence that the best drive of the game last week included a Hurts run. When the Eagles need a spark, Hurts\u2019 mobility can provide it. I would lean into that \u2014 at least to invigorate the offense.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s at stake: The Eagles currently have a 90% chance to win NFC East, according to ESPN Analytics. That jumps to 95% with a win and falls to 83% with a loss (independent of other results). The Chargers have a 60% chance to make the playoffs, per ESPN Analytics. Their chances jump to 74% with a win and fall to 50% with a loss (independent of other results).<\/p>\n
It was also like seeing a unicorn. Designed runs have become rarities for Hurts in his fifth season as the Eagles\u2019 starting quarterback. After averaging 3.6 designed runs per game in his first four seasons as the starter, Hurts has dropped to 1.1 designed runs per game in 2025, according to Pro Football Focus. Hurts has gone without a single designed run in six of this season\u2019s 12 games. On one hand, that drop-off should come as a surprise, seeing as Hurts once proclaimed himself a \u201ctriple threat\u201d capable of dissecting defenses with his arm, his legs, and his mind. Among quarterbacks from 2021-2025, only Lamar Jackson boasts more rushing yards (3,531) than Hurts (3,108). On the other, though, there is plenty of precedent for quarterbacks who rush less as they progress in their careers, either by choice or by physical limitation. Those examples include Hurts\u2019 contemporaries such as Jackson (6.6 designed attempts per game before Year 5; 4.0 after) and Josh Allen (2.0; 1.6).<\/p>\n
The Eagles\u2019 signature Tush Push used to be an almost-automatic first down for the offense. It isn\u2019t that easy anymore. \u201cIt\u2019s becoming tougher and tougher,\u201d Jalen Hurts admitted after the loss to the Bears. In their 24-15 loss to the Bears on Black Friday, the Eagles attempted just one quarterback sneak and it resulted in a fumble when the ball was ripped from Hurts\u2019 hands. And that was just the latest failure for a play that is clearly no longer automatic for the Eagles\u2019 offense. In fact, their success rate on the play in recent weeks is a bit alarming. Over the last three games, the Eagles have attempted eight Tush Pushes with just two conversions. They have failed four times and had penalties on two others. They were just 1-for-6 with three failure and two penalties against the Lions. \u201cThe defense has been doing a good job getting a little bit of movement,\u201d said Dallas Goedert, who acts as a pusher on the play. \u201cWe just have to stick to it, get back to the basics. We\u2019ve seen different things. \u201cThe biggest thing is coming off the edge, knocking us off and getting strip attempts on Jalen and not letting him keep driving. We just need to detail what we\u2019re doing and then they\u2019re selling out so hard to stop it, some of the complements we have off of it could also work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Defensive tackle Jalen Carter missed Thursday\u2019s practice with injuries to both shoulders and could be sidelined against the Chargers on Monday night. The Eagles have a deep defensive tackle room, and with Carter, who plays more than 70% of the defensive snaps, potentially missing time, there could be more on the plates of players like Moro Ojomo, Jordan Davis, Byron Young, and Ty Robinson. \u201cI think that we\u2019ve got a defense of a lot of guys that want opportunity and want to play hard and you know I think we\u2019re just excited to have that opportunity,\u201d Ojomo said. \u201cObviously a little sad for Jalen not to be there, but I think he should get right and get his body feeling as good as possible and we\u2019re gonna be ready when he comes back. \u201d[My snaps] probably go up maybe a little bit, but I think that we have the greatest organization and they\u2019ll help me be put in the best possible situation to handle that workload.\u201d<\/p>\n
16) JALEN HURTS. Philadelphia\u2019s offense is broken, and Jalen Hurts is having a tough time finding anyone unless it\u2019s a go ball to A.J. Brown in single coverage. Those throws are still highly effective, but Hurts\u2019 threat as a runner doesn\u2019t seem to be nearly as significant as we\u2019ve seen it be in the past. Frankly, the offense is constipated, and Hurts isn\u2019t helping matters much, failing to see open receivers and struggling with accuracy when locating them.<\/p>\n

Confidence in the Chargers\u2019 postseason potential has grown and and shrunk wildly this year depending on the week. After starting 3-0 against the AFC West, it seemed like it was going to be a magical year for the Bolts. Fast-forward to their bye week (after going 4-4 over their next eight games) and the vibes nothing close to immaculate as they were coming off a lopsided loss to the Jaguars. But even after dominating the Raiders this past Sunday, it\u2019s difficult to feel much optimism regarding their playoff chances given that they\u2019re about to face a final five-game stretch that against the Eagles, Chiefs, Cowboys, Texans, and Broncos, all of whom have eight or more wins aside from the surging Cowboys. The Chargers will likely have to go at least 2-3 in those games to get to 10 wins if they want a better than decent shot at earning spot. Remember, last season every team that won 10 games except for the Seahawks made the postseason. Nine-win teams can make it, of course, but 10 is just that much safer.<\/p>\n
In his Thursday press conference, offensive coordinator Greg Roman also noted that the team is planning to have Herbert available for Week 14. \u201cFor this game in particular, we\u2019re really optimistic Justin is going to play,\u201d Roman said, via Daniel Popper of TheAthletic.com. Herbert missed only 10 snaps during Sunday\u2019s victory over the Raiders before going back in the game. But, Herbert operated exclusively out of shotgun.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s an interesting development, to say the least. After Buffalo\u2019s claim made the rounds, a follow-up report shortly after by Ian Rapoport stated that the Philadelphia Eagles also placed a claim for Slay, who played four seasons in Philly as part of the Eagles\u2019 two Super Bowl teams. The Bills\u2019 claim was higher in the chain, thus denying executive vice president & general manager Howie Roseman and Philadelphia a reunion with Slay. One might find way to speculating that Slay simply wanted to return to the Eagles, convinced no one else would claim him \u2014 or simply committed to a sudden retirement should a team other than Philadelphia jump into the equation. Slay will forfeit $350,000 in salary that was due to him over the course of the final five weeks of the 2025 regular season.<\/p>\n
The Dallas Cowboys lost on Thursday night to the Detroit Lions. Losing in general is difficult to take, but doing so when your playoff lives are on the line makes it especially frustrating. For all intents and purposes the Cowboys held a 23% chance of reaching the playoffs before Thursday night\u2019s game. In losing their odds dropped to 9% which means you can use the gif from Dumb and Dumber to talk about it. The New York Times playoff simulator gives the Cowboys a 41% chance of reaching the playoffs if they win out (Vikings, Chargers, at Commanders, and at Giants). Even winning out is below 50% which is why Thursday night was so critical.<\/p>\n
The Washington Commanders held their second full practice of the week today. Jayden Daniels participated in his first full practice since dislocating his left elbow in Week 9. He has missed the last three games due to the injury, and will miss another if he\u2019s not cleared to practice fully this week. Dan Quinn said he would \u201ctake it all the way to Friday\u201d for a decision on whether he plays against the Vikings on Sunday. Daniels wasn\u2019t cleared for contact, but he could still return this week.<\/p>\n
What will happen? I don\u2019t know. A case can be made that there has been progress, and a tear-down is the wrong approach. If there wasn\u2019t at least some talent, how does a team even get the opportunity to blow five double-digit leads? That team has to have the ability to establish those leads in order to blow them. A case can also be made that there should have been more progress, and that the leap forward this organization needs to take is not going to happen with Schoen in charge of personnel. At some point, the \u201cprocess\u201d Schoen always seems to be so proud of and the fact that he is right that there are some good pieces in place won\u2019t be enough to save Schoen\u2019s job. Will that be when this season ends? The Giants have four games left. The next three are against Washington, Minnesota, and Las Vegas, teams with a combined 9-27 record. If Schoen wants the argument that the Giants\u2019 talent is better than its performance argument to hold up, he had better hope the team wins at least two of those games.<\/p>\n
This is the story across the NFL this week with these games really setting the stage. The team with the most to lose? The Ravens.
