Chamberlain is locking users deeper into its proprietary, subscription-centric ecosystem \u2014 a trend punctuated by its quiet exit from the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the industry group behind the interoperability smart home standard, Matter. Which, coincidentally, just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/821707\/matter-smart-home-standard-supports-cameras-apple-ring-google-nest#:~:text=Garage%20door%20controllers%20arrive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced support for garage door controllers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">For those unfamiliar, let me take you back to 2014, when Chamberlain launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.myq.com%2Fsmart-garage-door-opener%2Fp%2FMYQ-G0401-ESMC\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MyQ Garage<\/a>, its first smart garage door controller. An accessory device that wirelessly connects to your Chamberlain or Liftmaster (the company\u2019s pro-install line) opener, the MyQ lets you control your door opener from your phone \u2014 a huge upgrade that allows you to check on and close your door from anywhere. Subsequently, Chamberlain has integrated MyQ directly into its openers and now has a broad <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.myq.com%2F\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MyQ ecosystem<\/a> that includes security cameras, video doorbells, and keypads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Competitors quickly entered the market, including third-party companies with universal controllers that wire into the back of the opener. But these companies soon found that newer Chamberlain openers with the <a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US20110317835A1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">patented Security+ 2.0 technology<\/a> didn\u2019t work with these dry-contact triggers. So, they developed workarounds, initially by wiring their devices to an aftermarket remote control, then by using a software-based solution to mimic the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/argilo\/secplus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rolling security codes<\/a> the wired communication tech uses. This was first implemented by Ratgdo (which stands for Rage Against the Garage Door Opener), after founder Paul Wieland became<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/04\/technology\/personaltech\/why-one-man-is-fighting-for-our-right-to-control-our-garage-door-openers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> frustrated by MyQ\u2019s limitations.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meanwhile, Chamberlain, which was sold to <a href=\"https:\/\/chamberlaingroup.com\/press\/the-duchossois-group-agrees-to-sell-the-chamberlain-group-llc-to-blackstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">private equity firm Blackstone<\/a> in 2021, began <a href=\"https:\/\/chamberlaingroup.com\/press\/a-message-about-our-decision-to-prevent-unauthorized-usage-of-myq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">locking down its MyQ technology<\/a>, which it had been building directly into its openers. It discontinued its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/chamberlain-announces-launch-dates-for-apple-homekit-enabled-products-300386084.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple HomeKit bridge<\/a>, ended its Google Assistant integration (after first trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/staceyoniot.com\/chamberlain-plans-to-charge-for-ifttt-google-home-integrations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make people pay for it<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23949612\/chamberlain-myq-smart-garage-door-controller-homebridge-integrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blocked unofficial Home Assistant integrations<\/a>. Today, most of <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.myq.com%2Fworks-with-myq\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the integrations it supports<\/a> require a subscription or are tied to paid services such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/1\/7\/18167425\/amazon-key-garage-business-home-deliveries-prime-ces-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon Key<\/a>. Image: Chamberlain Group<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Technically, the big change is a shift to fully wireless communication; wired connections now only power the opener and safety sensors. \u201cOur communication architecture continues to leverage rolling code technology encryption, now augmented with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) operating at 2.4 GHz to provide a more secure handshake, faster provisioning, and extended range,\u201d says Marenson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">It\u2019s that patented rolling code tech that made it hard for third-party devices to work with MyQ products. And while their software-based workarounds relied on wireline communication, now that everything is wireless, those solutions won\u2019t work with the new devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Konnected.io founder Nate Clark, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/konnected.io\/products\/smart-garage-door-opener-blaq-myq-alternative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blaQ controller<\/a> works with Chamberlain openers, confirmed this on <a href=\"https:\/\/community.konnected.io\/t\/security-3-0-support\/40195\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Konnected\u2019s community forum<\/a>, writing that this \u201cis an intentional move by Chamberlain\/LM to lock you in to MyQ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">For many Chamberlain customers, the MyQ app is fine \u2014 as long as they can deal with the constant, intrusive ads and upsells for cloud video storage from MyQ\u2019s cameras, many of which are now integrated into the openers. But there are plenty of users who don\u2019t want to use multiple apps to control their homes, don\u2019t want critical access devices tied to the cloud, and prefer to integrate everything into one smart home ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Today, MyQ doesn\u2019t work with the most popular home automation platforms, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. Its connections are largely through subscription-based security companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/alarm.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alarm.com<\/a> and Vivint. It doesn\u2019t support free services such as CarPlay or Android Auto; instead, partnering directly with automakers, including Honda and Volkswagen, which charge a subscription of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vw.com\/en\/owners-and-services\/connectivity-and-apps\/connected-services\/myq-connected-garage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around $50 a year<\/a> to open your garage door from the screen in your car. (Chamberlain does work with the free HomeLink solution, a proprietary platform that uses an in-car button to connect to openers locally and through the cloud.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">It seems likely that these are all partnerships that pad the company\u2019s bottom line in ways that more open platforms don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">While Chamberlain has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/472288\/most-used-garage-door-opener-brands-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US-market share of over 70 percent<\/a>, there are alternatives. Riesebosch praises Genie and its Aladdin connectivity platform for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geniecompany.com\/aladdin-connect-smart-home-partners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more open approach<\/a> to the smart home. Lock-maker Kwikset recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwikset.com\/products\/kwikset-flex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched an opener<\/a>, which it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/smart-home\/766403\/kwisket-halo-select-plus-nfc-home-key-matter#:~:text=In%20the%20meantime,US%20and%20Canada.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says will be Matter-compatible<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Still, if you find yourself with a Chamberlain Group Security+ 3.0 garage door opener (the easiest way to identify one is to look at the learn button; white round means 3.0, yellow means 2.0), aftermarket manufacturers are working on solutions. However, Riesebosch says it will be difficult. \u201cChamberlain has put up some pretty big barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">One of these is a new validation check that phones home to confirm that any remote or accessory trying to connect to the opener is made by Chamberlain and not a counterfeit, duplicate, or clone. Marenson said that this cloud-based authentication was introduced with Security+ 3.0 due to \u201ca growing presence of counterfeit accessories \u2026 that do not meet the performance, security, and reliability standards of the myQ ecosystem,\u201d and it\u2019s designed to \u201cprotect our consumers and maintain the integrity of our trusted myQ user experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">If you\u2019re handy, you could hack a Chamberlain Security+ 3.0 remote by soldering the wires to connect it to your controller of choice. It supports Matter, so it works with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant, etc., giving you full smart home control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Chamberlain\u2019s new remotes for its Security+ 3.0 line appear to be similar in size to the existing ones, so they should fit inside this gadget.
