Police are investigating how a woman died and remained undiscovered for three days outside a police station on the NSW south coast.<\/p>\n
The 48-year-old woman’s body was found in a blue Toyota Yaris parked out the front of Lake Illawarra Police Station on Pioneer Drive about 4:30pm on Friday.<\/p>\n
Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar said CCTV showed the woman had entered the police station on Tuesday where she engaged with police and spent some time in the foyer.<\/p>\n
He said she then exited the station and is believed to have then entered the back seat of the vehicle about 6:30pm that day.<\/p>\n
“It does appear the woman had been living inside that vehicle,” Assistant Commissioner Cassar said.<\/p>\n

He said whether the woman engaged with police to ask for help, or to file a report, will form part of the investigation.<\/p>\n
He said police were working to formally identify the woman, who was found in an advanced state of decomposition.<\/p>\n
“The weather has been hot, the vehicle was locked, there would have been exceptional temperatures inside the vehicle,” he said.<\/p>\n

On Friday, a police officer investigating the parked vehicle discovered what appeared to be a “large object” underneath a blanket.<\/p>\n
NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene.<\/p>\n
Officers worked late into Friday night examining the scene.<\/p>\n
A critical incident investigation will be conducted by the South Coast Police District, overseen by the Professional Standards Command and Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.<\/p>\n
