\u201cThis is a big mistake that would endanger American children. Don\u2019t mess with success,\u201d said Tom Frieden<\/a>, CDC head under President Barack Obama<\/a>, in an appearance on CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Frieden, now president and CEO of global health nonprofit Resolve to Save Lives, noted that the universal recommendation hasn\u2019t resulted in \u201cany significant harm to children\u201d since the panel initially made it three decades ago.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices \u2014 composed of vaccine skeptics handpicked by conspiracy theorist and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a> \u2014 voted 8-3 to only recommend the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine for infants born to mothers who test positive for the virus.<\/p>\n

Hepatitis B is a liver infection that can lead to diseases such as liver cancer, cirrhosis and liver failure, especially for infants and children. Medical experts have since slammed<\/a> the panel\u2019s decision to roll back the recommendation. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd let me be very clear: Hepatitis B is a serious infection, and it\u2019s not only spread from the mother. That\u2019s why universal birth dose is the standard of care,\u201d he stressed. \u201cThis is basically infusing fiction-based rather than fact-based recommendations into the protection of our children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frieden called on health care professionals to ignore the recommendation from the \u201chandpicked, unscientific group of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I hope will happen is that insurers, states, cities, obstetricians, pediatricians will look at this and say there is no scientific credibility to this recommendation,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a violation of all of the basic principles of effective protection.
