(US Attorney&#8217;s Office)<\/p>\n<p>Carrero was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/12\/04\/teen-arrested-setting-homeless-man-ablaze-nyc-subway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested in Manhattan Thursday.<\/a> He was ordered held without bail Friday after prosecutors appealed a ruling by Magistrate Judge Robert Lehrburger, who at Carrero\u2019s arraignment hours earlier, had ordered the defendant released \u2014 reportedly due to mental health issues \u2014 and given him two weeks to post $100,000 bond, a law enforcement official confirmed to the Daily News. In response to the appeal, Manhattan Federal District Judge Valerie Caproni promptly ordered Carrero remanded to custody.<\/p>\n<p>The teen is charged with arson resulting in the injury of another person, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 40 years, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs alleged, Hiram Carrero committed a horrific arson, starting a fire inside of a New York City subway car where a victim was sleeping,\u201d U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said. \u201cAs a result of that arson, the victim has suffered severe injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"The victim is shown with his legs engulfed in flames at the 42nd St. - Times Square station. (Theodore Parisienne \/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Police officers at the station poured water on the victim to put out the flames, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Medics rushed the man to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/Video from inside the train car shows that as the train traveled north towards the 42nd Street \u2013 Times Square subway stop, the fire flared up, engulfing the victim\u2019s legs and a portion of the train car in flames. When the train arrived at 42nd Street \u2013 Times Square, the victim emerged, burning from the train\">NewYork-Presbyterian\/Weill Cornell Medical Center<\/a> for treatment of severe leg burns, cops said.<\/p>\n<p>At Carrero\u2019s Harlem home Friday evening, his mother, Wanda Carrero, 63, told the Daily News she had just returned from hearing her son\u2019s case in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just got out of court,\u201d she said, breathing heavily. \u201cI\u2019m having an asthma attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked by The News what happened to her son, she said, \u201cI don\u2019t understand.
