\n\tMonths after her American Eagle campaign<\/a> sparked backlash, Sydney Sweeney<\/a> is addressing the fallout around the ad\u2019s public perception.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 2x Emmy nominee recently said she \u201cwas honestly surprised by the reaction\u201d to her \u2018Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans<\/a>\u2018 campaign, which drew controversy and accusations of veiled racism upon its release in July over the use of \u201cjeans\u201d as a double entendre for \u201cgenes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI did it because I love the jeans and love the brand,\u201d Sweeney told People<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren\u2019t true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney explained that she \u201cleads with kindness\u201d and felt the need to clarify her stance following a recent interview question on the topic<\/a> that went viral for her response.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnyone who knows me knows that I\u2019m always trying to bring people together. I\u2019m against hate and divisiveness. In the past my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press but recently I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it,\u201d added Sweeney. \u201cSo I hope this new year brings more focus on what connects us instead of what divides us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing Sweeney\u2019s controversial blue jeans ad, which appeared to be a nod to Brooke Shields\u2019 infamous 1980 Calvin Klein campaign, American Eagle brushed off the backlash<\/a> in a statement that the ad \u201cis and always was about the jeans.\u201d Meanwhile, Donald Trump endorsed the ad<\/a>, saying, \u201cIf Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n
